Van Zee Hat Trick Guides Sioux Falls to 4-0 Win Over Minnesota Crookston

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston fell 4-0 to the University of Sioux Falls Friday, September 26 at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. Addison Van Zee scored a hat trick to lead the Cougars to Friday's win. Minnesota Crookston was within 1-0 for the majority of the game, with USF scoring three times in the final 25 minutes. 

Minnesota Crookston dropped to 1-4-1 (0-3 NSIC) with Friday's win. Sioux Falls improved to 3-3 (1-2 NSIC) with the victory. USF leads the series 7-4-2 since the first meeting in 2012 when the Cougars joined the NSIC.

Sioux Falls finished with 18 shots, with 11 on goal. Minnesota Crookston notched four shots, with three on frame. Sarah Burgum (Sr., F, Mandan, N.D.) paced the Golden Eagles with two shots on goal. Elise Lefers (So., F, Brookings, S.D.) tallied a shot on goal. USF looked to Van Zee with three goals, and six shots on goal.

Sioux Falls jumped out to a 1-0 advantage with a 27th minute goal from Addison Van Zee, who has tallied three goals this season. The Cougars outshot Minnesota Crookston 9-2 in the first half. Sioux Falls tallied one corner in the first 45 minutes. 

Van Zee chipped in her second goal of the game, and her fourth of the season, in the 65th minute to widen the gap to 2-0 in favor of the Cougars. 

Van Zee made it a hat trick in the 84th minute when a defender slipped and allowed Van Zee to strike it past King to widen the gap to 3-0. 

The Cougars obtained a penalty kick goal in the 87th minute, put away by Sadie Hunter to extend the lead to 4-0. 

Minnesota Crookston put the first shot on target in the game when Burgum struck a shot in the third minute saved by Jost. The Cougars controlled the next 23 minutes with five shots, including two from Van Zee on frame. USF broke the scoreless tie in the 27th minute with Van Zee's goal.

The Cougars outshot Minnesota Crookston 3-1 in the final 18 minutes of the half with the only shot for the Golden Eagles coming from Aleisha Cortez (Fr., MF, South St. Paul, Minn.).

Sioux Falls notched the first four shots of the second half with Van Zee putting away her second goal in the 65th minute to extend the advantage to 2-0. Minnesota Crookston put together their best stretch of play from the 75th to 80th minutes with Burgum and Elise Lefers (So., F, Brookings, S.D.) each testing Jost. 

Van Zee made it a hat trick in the 84th minute, and Hunter put the game away with a penalty kick to give Sioux Falls a 4-0 win.

Minnesota Crookston heads to Marshall, Minn., to face Southwest Minnesota State University Sunday, September 28 at 1 p.m.
