Langdon, N.D. - The Golden Eagle Hockey Team was set for a Valentine's Day game against Lake Region State to wrap up the regular season. After two tight matchups earlier in the year, the Golden Eagles were hoping to capture two more wins this weekend. In net for the Golden Eagles was Wyatt Olsonawski (Jr., G, Hallock, Minn.) who entered the evening with a 9-1-0 record, a 1.97 goals against average, and a .919 save percentage. For the Royals it was Logan Hendrickson with a 7-8-0 record, a 4.20 goals against average, and a .900 save percentage.
Â
The first period did a good job of setting the tone for the remainder of the game, with four total goals in the opening 20 minutes. Lake Region forward Alex Gellner opened the scoring with a goal nine minutes in to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Kaleb Hodny netted the Royals' second goal of the night. The Golden Eagles would head to a 5-on-3 man advantage with time dwindling in the first period. That was when Tyler Lorenz (Fr., D, Shakopee, Minn.) fired one from the point to get the Golden Eagles back in the game, Fox Dodds (R-Jr., F, Watford City, N.D.) and Anthony Foster (So., F, Warroad, Minn.) picked up the assists. A minute later, Anthony Foster scored his own goal to tie the game at two on the powerplay, Mason Romfo (Fr., F, Langdon, N.D.) had the assist.
Â
The Golden Eagles did not miss a beat to start the second period, with Mitchell Coleman (Sr., F, Hatton, N.D.) scoring just under two minutes in. His goal was assisted by Ben Hines (So., F, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Griffen Sonstegard (Jr., D, Baudette, Minn.) and the Golden Eagles were ahead 3-2. Plenty of time passed between that goal and the next goal, and in an effort to keep each goalie warm heading into regionals, Head Coach Steve Johnson made a goaltender change with 10 minutes left in the second as Adam Goody (So., G, Airdrie, Alberta) took over. Six and a half minutes later, the Royals tied the game with a second goal from Alex Gellner. With three seconds remaining in the second, the Golden Eagles regained their one goal lead when Mason Romfo found the back of the net for his 29th goal of the season, Jackson Dodds (R-Jr., F, Watford City, N.D.) and Jackson Fuller (Sr., F, Bloomington, Minn.) added on the helpers.
Â
The Golden Eagles 4-3 lead would not last long, as 10 minutes into the third, Brett Lesage found twine with the tying goal. Three minutes later, the Royals reclaimed the lead with a Brady Regner goal to put the Golden Eagles on their heels. The Golden Eagles fought for their next goal, looking to even the scoring once again, and who else but Mason Romfo with the late goal to tie things up one more time. Romfo's second goal of the game was assisted by Tyler Lorenz. The final couple minutes of the third period went by without another goal and, at 5-5, the game was heading into overtime.Â
Â
Overtime did not have many shots or chances, with the Golden Eagles outshooting the Royals 3-2. But, it was on that second Royals shot that the game would be put to bed, when Brady Wicklund found the back of the net. The Golden Eagles fell 6-5 for their first overtime loss of the season.Â

The Golden Eagles and Royals will face off again later today at 3:30 p.m. in Devils Lake, North Dakota.
