TURLOCK, Calif. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 6-3 to Stanislaus State Saturday, February 15 in the season opener in Turlock, Calif.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 0-1, while the Warriors improved to 4-4 with the victory in the series opener.
The loss went to Isaac Roers, who allowed two runs on three hits. He had one strikeout, and no walks. The win went to Zach Geiss, who improved to 1-0 with the victory.
Nate Benning (So., LHP, Browerville, Minn.) started and tossed four innings, allowing two runs, on four hits. He had one strikeout, and two walks. Isaac Wensloff (Jr., RHP, Roseau, Minn.) allowed one run, in one inning. Caden Edwards (R-Sr., LHP, Duluth, Minn.) allowed one run in 0.2 innings.
Rocco Gurrola got the start and tossed 5.2 innings, allowing two runs, on seven hits. Cameron Rosen allowed one run, in 1.2 innings.
Minnesota Crookston was lifted by Americo Sculati (R-Jr., OF, Golden Valley, Calif.), who went 2-of-4, with an RBI, and a run scored. Josh Dykhoff (Jr., RHP/DH, Wadena, Minn.) went 1-of-3, with a run scored. Sawyer Satrom (Sr., IF, Portland, N.D.) finished 1-of-4, with a run scored. Kodi Miller (Sr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) was 1-of-3, with an RBI.
Stanislaus State was guided by Flavio Perez, who went 2-of-5, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Jacob Baker went 2-of-3, with an RBI, and a run scored. Tyler Van Dyk was 1-of-1, with a run scored.
The Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a Perez home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the second inning.
Stanislaus State pushed the advantage to 2-0 in the fourth with a Baker double to left field, plating Van Dyk.
Perez came through again in the fifth with a double, driving in J.D. Madrigal to push the advantage to 3-0.
Minnesota Crookston made up ground in the top of the sixth with a Sculati single, plating Satrom to trim the deficit to 3-1. Later in the frame, Kodi Miller reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in Dykhoff to cut it to 3-2.
The Golden Eagles got the equalizer in the top of the eighth when Sculati scored on the throw following a Connor Bushbaum (R-Jr., OF, Saginaw, Minn.) groundout.
The Warriors took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth when Baker scored on an Edwards wild pitch to make it 4-3. Stanislaus State extended their lead to 5-3 later in the inning when Leonisio crossed the plate on a Madrigal groundout. The Warriors widened the gap to 6-3 when Valdivia scored on an Edwards wild pitch.
The Golden Eagles were unable to get the answer in the top of the ninth, as Stanislaus State picked up a 6-3 win.
Minnesota Crookston is set to wrap up the series with Stanislaus State Sunday, February 16 at Warrior Baseball Field in Turlock, Calif., at 2 and 4 p.m. C.T.
