Minnesota Crookston Earns 0-0 Draw with Wolves to Cap Off Homecoming

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team earned a 0-0 draw Sunday, October 5 against Northern State University. The game was contested on a rain-soaked day with high wind gusts throughout. 

Minnesota Crookston sits at 1-6-2 (0-5-1 NSIC) with their first point in conference play Sunday. Northern State is 1-6-2 (1-3-2 NSIC) after the tie. Minnesota Crookston picks up their first draw with the Wolves since October 13, 2013 and their first point against Northern State since a 2-1 win October 18, 2015.

The Golden Eagles finished with four shots, with three on frame. Northern State notched 15 shots, nine on the woodwork. Minnesota Crookston notched all four of their shots in the second half. 

Minnesota Crookston came close to going ahead 1-0 in the 59th minute after Sarah Burgum (Sr., F, Mandan, N.D.) had scored a goal after rebounding the ball off an Aleisha Cortez (Fr., MF, South St. Paul, Minn.) shot that hit off the crossbar. Burgum was ruled offside, and the goal disallowed.

Cortez paced the U of M Crookston with two shots, one on frame. Burgum, and Anna Kuecker (So., D, Marshall, Minn.) had Minnesota Crookston's other two shots. Chloe Voss, Jaylee Hofer, and Greta Brooks each notched three shots. Kailyn Poppen had two shots, both coming on frame.

Payton King (Fr., GK, Fairfield, Calif.) picked up her third shutout of her young career, with nine saves. King has eight starts in her first year in the maroon and gold. Ilee Neemeyer earned the shutout for Northern State.

Northern State had a series of chances in the 31st minute, but King staved off a pair of shots on goal from Brooks, and Poppen. The Wolves continued to pepper opportunities with a 36th minute chance from Kennedi Gack. Minnesota Crookston did not have a shot in the first 45 minutes.

The Wolves opened the second half with a shot on goal in the 50th minute from Lauren Carpenter. The Golden Eagles took over from there as the aggressor. In the 57th minute, Cortez put a shot on frame which led to a corner kick. Kuecker had an opportunity in the 58th minute off the corner. In the 59th minute, Cortez put a laser on frame but it bounced off the crossbar, where Burgum gathered it for a goal, but she was ruled offside leaving the game tied 0-0.

Northern State had a chance in the 65th minute with a shot on goal from Voss. The Wolves had chances in the 69th and 71st minutes from Poppen, and Peters. 

In the 86th minute, Savannah Funk got an opportunity on net, put away by King. Minnesota Crookston had a final chance in the 87th minute from Burgum, but it was corralled by Neemeyer.

Minnesota Crookston hits the road to face Winona State University Friday, October 10 at 5 p.m., in Winona, Minn.
