Winona State Comes Back to Defeat Minnesota Crookston 2-1 in Final Seconds Friday

WINONA, Minn. - Winona State University came back from a 1-0 deficit to upend the University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team 2-1 Friday, October 10 at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium in Winona, Minn.

The Golden Eagles played their closest game with the Warriors since a 1-1 tie in 2018. Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-7-2 (0-6-1 NSIC) with Friday's loss. Winona State improved to 4-2-3 (3-2-2 NSIC) with the victory.

Minnesota Crookston held a 1-0 lead after an own goal, and kept the advantage until the Warriors scored two goals in the final 18 minutes of the game. The Golden Eagles had one shot, while Winona State notched 22 and 10 shots on goal. Minnesota Crookston's shot came from Tessa VanOverbeke (Jr., D, Hartford, S.D.).

Winona State was guided by goals from Madison Barnick, and Sonia Gutierrez. Quinn Williams, and Barnick each notched two shots on goal.

In goal, Jordan Metz (So., G, Lino Lakes, Minn.) allowed two goals in 90 minutes, with eight saves. Abigail Rounds allowed one goal in net for the Warriors.

Minnesota Crookston went ahead 1-0 in the 31st minute in the first half when Winona State scored an own goal. 

The Warriors knotted the game 1-1 with a 73rd minute goal from Gutierrez, off a Sam Perez assist. Winona State earned the game-winner in the final minute of the game when Barnick scored off a Sarah Strating helper.

The Golden Eagles head to Concordia University-St. Paul Sunday, October 12 for a meeting in St. Paul, Minn.
