CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team fell 1-0 to St. Cloud State University Sunday, October 26 on Senior Day at the Minnesota Crookston Soccer Field.
The Golden Eagles have continued to play strong defensively in recent weeks. They have given up just 10 goals in the last nine games for an average of 1.11 goals per game. Minnesota Crookston played their closest game with the Huskies since a 3-2 loss to St. Cloud State November 2, 2021 in Crookston. The one goal is the fewest Minnesota Crookston has allowed against the Huskies since a 1-0 loss September 16, 2018 in Crookston. Minnesota Crookston dropped to 1-12-2 (0-11-1 NSIC) with Sunday's loss. St. Cloud State improved to 10-1-4 (8-1-3 NSIC). The Huskies are tied for second in the NSIC with Bemidji State University.
Minnesota Crookston has shown vast improvements defensively in their first season under Head Coach Danny Burstein. The Golden Eagles have allowed 25 goals this season, compared to 43 in 2024. Minnesota Crookston has three games remaining on their 2025 schedule.
The Golden Eagles finished with one shot on goal from Elise Lefers (So., F, Brookings, S.D.). St. Cloud State tallied nine shots, with six on frame. The Huskies were led by the goal from Jordan Kardelis, her second of the season. Linsey Trapino had the assist. Grace Olson paced the Huskies with three shots, with two on goal. Brooke Quam had two shots, with one shot on goal.
Jordan Metz (So., GK, Lino Lakes, Minn.) has had a string of impressive games in net for the Golden Eagles. Metz allowed one goal, with five saves. Metz has six starts in 2025, with a 1.69 goals against average and 64 saves.
Jaylee Strickland had a clean sheet, with one save, in the win for the Huskies.
The Huskies had back-to-back shots in the seventh and eight minutes on opportunities from Olson, and Trapino. Olson put a chance on frame in the 13th minute, which was put away by Metz.
Neither team had a shot on goal until Kardelis put away a shot from the right side of the box after it was deflected out by Trapino in front of the box. The goal put St. Cloud State ahead 1-0,
Minnesota Crookston's lone shot on goal came within a minute of the goal as Lefers looked to strike off the kickoff after the tally for the Huskies.
The Huskies had an opportunity in the 59th minute from Ellie Primerano, put away by Metz. A Quam chance was squashed by Metz in the 65th minute.
Minnesota Crookston was able to get three-straight free kicks in a three-minute stretch but were unable to generate scoring chances. The Golden Eagles defended well, but played a large portion of the game on their defensive end.
Sunday was Senior Day for Minnesota Crookston as they honored seniors Sarah Burgum (F, Mandan, N.D.), Emma Dudycha (D/MF, Austin, Minn.), and Julia Finch (D, Woodbury, Minn.) for their contributions on and off the field. All three student-athletes have been strong in the classroom, and have helped the Golden Eagles enter a new era of soccer under Burstein.
