Golden Eagles Fall to Concordia-St. Paul Despite Most Competitive Game with Golden Bears Since 2016

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team took the second-place team in the conference Concordia University-St. Paul to the wire in a 1-0 loss Sunday, October 12 at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul. The Golden Bears scored the lone goal early in the second half in the 46th minute to defeat the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles played their closest game against Concordia-St. Paul since a 0-0 tie with the Golden Bears October 1, 2016. Minnesota Crookston has four one-goal losses and a tie in their last five games, as they are proving that they are showing growth in the Danny Burstein era. Minnesota Crookston fell to 1-7-2 (0-6-1 NSIC) with Sunday's loss. Concordia-St. Paul improved to 8-1-2 (5-1-2 NSIC) with Sunday's win.

Sophia Haase scored for the Golden Bears in the 46th minute off an assist from Brooke Nelson. Haase leads Concordia-St. Paul with seven goals, while Nelson has four goals, and an assist. 

The Golden Bears notched 32 shots, with 15 on goal. Minnesota Crookston finished with three shots, with two on frame. The Golden Eagles were paced by one shot on goal from both Riley Edemann (Fr., Santa Clarita, Calif.), and Sarah Burgum (Sr., F, Mandan, N.D.). Julia Finch (Sr., D, Woodbury, Minn.) also had a shot. Lexi Pettit led the Golden Bears with seven shots. Haase had six shots, as did Lainie Wehmhoff.

Jordan Metz (So., G, Lino Lakes, Minn.) allowed just one goal in net in 90 minutes, making 14 saves. Kayla Matuzak put up the clean sheet with two saves. 

The Golden Bears notched seven shots on goal in the first half. Minnesota Crookston did not tally a first half shot. 

Haase broke the scoreless tie 59 seconds into the second half with a goal off a helper from Nelson. Minnesota Crookston had their first shot on goal in the 51st minute of the game off a chance from Edemann. Burgum had the squad's second shot on goal in the 81st minute.

Minnesota Crookston remains on the road to face Bemidji State University Friday, October 17 at 6 p.m.
