Minnesota Crookston Falls to No. 8/11 Minnesota State on the Road

MANKATO, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team fell to No. 8/11 Minnesota State University 95-56 Saturday, January 11 at the Taylor Center. The Mavericks used big performances in the second and fourth quarters to pick up the victory, as they outscored the Golden Eagles 55-27. Minnesota Crookston trailed by just four after the first quarter.

Minnesota Crookston dropped to 6-10 (4-6 NSIC) with Saturday's loss, while Minnesota State improved to 15-2 (11-0 NSIC). The Mavericks, the NCAA Division II reigning National Champion, have won the last nine games in the series. Minnesota Crookston earned the weekend split after a victory over Winona State Friday. The Golden Eagles are tied for ninth in the conference standings. 

The Golden Eagles were guided by Emma Miller (Jr., G, Albertville, Minn.), who tallied 14 points on 6-of-16 from the field. Miller has 1,342 career points, needing 117 points to surpass Alexa Thielman for fifth in scoring all-time. 

Natalie Mikrot (Jr., G, Willow River, Minn.) came off the bench for a season-high 11 points on 4-of-8 from the field, and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Halle Winjum (Fr., G, Crookston, Minn.) tallied six points, and eight boards, and dished out five assists. 

The Golden Eagles went 20-of-57 from the field for 35.1 percent. They were 7-of-25 for 28.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 9-of-13 for 69.2 percent from the foul line. Minnesota Crookston was outrebounded 46-31. They finished with 26 turnovers. The Golden Eagles showed improvement from last season's meetings with the Mavericks, as they cut down their turnovers by 12, and 16 respectively. In addition, they cut their deficits by 12, and 23 points respectively.

Minnesota State looked to 20 points from Natalie Bremer. Elisabeth Gadient notched 17 points, and a team-high four steals. Destinee Bursch had 11 points, and six assists. Shantell Harden finished with 10 points.

The Mavericks went 38-of-74 from the field for 51.4 percent. They shot 4-of-15 for 26.7 percent, and 15-of-18 for 83.3 percent from the foul line. They notched 22 assists, to 14 turnovers. Minnesota State had 58 points in the paint, and 25 points off turnovers.

The Golden Eagles were tied with Minnesota State 14-14 with 1:40 remaining in the first stanza after a strong quarter. Minnesota Crookston trailed just 24-21 after a Nicole Hernandez (R-Sr., F/C, Oak Creek, Wis.) trey. From that point, the Mavericks went on a 20-2 run to push out to a 21-point lead. Minnesota Crookston was unable to come back after that point.

Minnesota Crookston remains on the road to face Concordia University-St. Paul Friday, January 17 in St. Paul, Minn.
