Minnesota Crookston Soccer Picks Up Scoreless Draw with Black Hills State

SPEARFISH, S.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team earned a 0-0 tie with Black Hills State University Sunday, September 15 at Black Hills Power Sports Complex in Spearfish, S.D. The clean sheet is the first for the Golden Eagles since a 1-0 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead September 17, 2021. The draw is the first win or tie for Minnesota Crookston since a 1-1 tie against the University of Sioux Falls October 14, 2022. 

The Golden Eagles improved to 0-2-1 with Sunday's draw in the Black Hills, while The Yellow Jackets sit at 0-2-2. Both teams are trying to find the back of the net for the first time in 2024.

Minnesota Crookston's play was highlighted by the combined clean sheet by Jordan Metz (Fr., GK, Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Emma Stempien (Sr., GK, Plymouth, Mich.). Metz played 86:21, picking up the shutout, with nine saves. Stempien allowed no goals in the final 3:39. The pair picked up the first shutout for the Golden Eagles since Abby Olsen against the Dragons in 2021. The back line of Kali Yates (So., D, Hedgesville, W.V.), Tessa VanOverbeke (So., D/MF, Hartford, S.D.), and Madison Lein (So., D, Bismarck, N.D.) was also vital in the clean sheet.

The Golden Eagles finished with three shots, with one goal. Lein had the shot on goal, while Emmah Burnes (So., MF, Tulare, Calif.), and Sarah Burgum (Jr., F, Mandan, N.D.) each had shots. Black Hills State notched 23 shots, with nine on goal. The Yellow Jackets were guided by Bailey Smith with four shots. Whitney Hansen notched three shots. Ella Cornelius, Paige Hill, and Kylie Hayes each added shots.

The shutout for Black Hills State came from Allanah Facio and Zoe Wiggall, each who played 45 minutes.

Minnesota Crookston has shown improvement through three games, especially defensively. The Golden Eagles are only allowing 0.67 goals per game in the first three tilts. Minnesota Crookston allowed 3.72 goals per game during the 2023 campaign.

The Golden Eagles open NSIC play Friday, September 20 at Bemidji State University at 4 p.m., at Chet Anderson Stadium.
