Sioux Falls, S.D. – Minnesota Crookston tennis saw their historic season come to a close in heartbreaking fashion on Friday night in the NSIC quarterfinals to Sioux Falls, 4-3. USF won the final singles match of the night to clinch the fourth point.
Minnesota Crookston's 2024 comes to a close with a 10-5 overall record and 5-4 in NSIC play. The 10 wins overall and five wins in conference play are both program records. It was also their debut in the NSIC tournament.
The Cougars would get the all so important doubles point, clinching it with a 7-5 victory over
Daniela de Lucas Rivera (Madrid, Spain) and
Ariadna Solis Guals (Santpedor, Spain).
Kavya Singh (Jr., Agra, India) and
Nadia Cases Mundet (Barcelona, Spain) earned a 6-2 win in doubles.
Trailing 1-0, the match would move on to the singles portion.
The Cougars would win a pair of matches early and take a 3-0 lead, as Sydney Osborn would defeat
Blaike Zander (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.) in straight sets and Chloe Siegfort of USF would knock off de Lucas Rivera.
The Golden Eagles would need to mount a comeback.
Madeleine Schneider (Sr., Cartringen, Germany), the all-time program record holder for wins in a career, would win another one, winning two straight sets, after losing the first one.
Cases Mundet and Singh would each win their match, so it would come down to the showdown on court three with Danielle Thorfinnson and Solis Guals. In a thrilling match, Thorfinnson would trail 1-0, but defeat Solis Guals in the next two to earn the win for her and the Cougars, sending USF to the semi-finals.
Minnesota Crookston will graduate just one senior; their all-time record holder,
Madeleine Schneider. We wish Madeleine the best in her future endeavors. Once a Golden Eagle, always a Golden Eagle.
