ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team clinched a 5-2 win over California University (Pa.) with two super tiebreaker third set wins by Madeleine Schneider (Sr., Gartringen, Germany) and Ariadna Solis Guals (Fr., Santpedor, Spain). The match was highly contested, with Minnesota Crookston edging the Vulcans.
The Golden Eagles continue their historic start to the 2024 season improving to 7-2 (2-2 NSIC) with the victory. California (Pa.) falls to 4-7 with the loss.
The Golden Eagles went up 1-0 after taking 2-of-3 doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Blaike Zander (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.) and Schneider improved to 6-3 with a 6-2 victory over Diletta Maria Mungo and Bega Gotor. At the No. 3 position, Nadia Cases Mundet (Fr., Barcelona, Spain) and Kavya Singh (Jr., Agra, India) moved to 7-1 with a 6-4 victory over Carmen Duran and Lilli Schreider. The Vulcans picked up a 6-3 win at the No. 1 slot with a Leandra Guldimann and Maria Del mar Ojeda victory over Solis Guals and Daniela de Lucas Rivera (Fr., Madrid, Spain).
In singles, the Vulcans evened the score 1-1 with a 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory from Del Mar Ojeda over Zander. The Golden Eagles took the lead 2-1 when Cases Mundet defeated Gotor, 6-1, 6-1. California tied the game 2-2 with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 win from Duran over Singh. At the No. 2 spot, De Lucas Rivera upended Guldimann, 7-6, 6-4. At the No. 1 spot, Schneider took the first set 6-2, but Mungo came back to take the second set 6-3. Schneider clinched the match with a 16-14 super tiebreaker win in what was an intense back-and-forth match. Solis Guals moved the score to 5-2 with a 12-10 super tiebreaker win, after coming back from a 7-6 deficit to force the tiebreaker with a 6-2 set two win.
Minnesota Crookston returns to action March 22 against Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn.
