Purdue Northwest Comes Back in the Eighth to Defeat Golden Eagles 7-5

LEESBURG, Fla. - Purdue University Norhwest scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to comeback and upend the University of Minnesota Crookston 7-5 at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg, Fla.

The Golden Eagles had overcome a 4-3 deficit in the sixth inning guided by a Kodi Miller (Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) home run, but allowed three runs in the eighth as they fell to 9-9 (3-5 NSIC) with Friday's loss. The game wraps up an 11-game road trip in Florida for the Golden Eagles. Minnesota Crookston ended the trip with a 7-4 mark. Purdue Northwest improved to 9-5 with the win. The Golden Eagles and Pride split their two games against each other 1-1. The game was played at Pat Thomas Stadium, a venue that has been hosting baseball since 1937, when it was known as the Ballpark at Venetian Gardens.

Nate Benning (Fr., LHP, Browerville, Minn.) got the ball in the start and went 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He walked two. Carsen Barta (Fr., RHP, Fargo, N.D.) came on in relief and tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks. Jacob Mathiason (Jr., RHP, Rockford, Minn.) continued to be one of the team's most reliable relievers, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing no runs on three hits. Mathiason struck out two. Joey Connelly (So., LHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on one hit and two walks in 0.1 innings. Caden Edwards (Jr., LHP, Duluth, Minn.) wrapped up the game, pitching 0.2 scoreless innings.

The Golden Eagles were guided by Cole Hebl (Fr., OF/1B, Hillsboro, N.D.), who went 2-of-4, with an RBI and a run scored. Jake Hjelle (R-Sr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) finished 1-of-4, with a run scored. Miller went 1-of-3, with an RBI, and a run scored, including his third home run of the season. Mitch Goodwin (R-Sr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) was 1-of-1, with an RBI and a run scored.

Eric Beck went 3.1 innings for the Pride, allowing three runs on five hits. Joe Tor earned the win for Purdue Northwest, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits. He struck out three, and walked one. Andrew Petsche picked up his second save of the season for the Pride.

The Pride jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the second when Jayden Smith singled to left field, scoring Drake Ballard. They continued their scoring rally when Billy Jones singled to right field, plating Smith. Purdue Northwest extended the lead to 3-0 when Luke Montgomery laced a double to left field, bringing in Jones. They rounded out the second-inning scoring rally with an Owen Winters double, scoring Montgomery to push the lead to 4-0.

The Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to 4-1 in the fourth with a Hebl single to score Hjelle. They continued their run with a Goodwin sacrifice fly to plate Hebl to trim the deficit to 4-2. Minnesota Crookston got the Purdue Northwest advantage down to 4-3 when Kobe Senn (R-So., IF, Fargo, N.D.) scored on a Josh Dykhoff (So., RHP/DH, Wadena, Minn.) groundout.

Minnesota Crookston knotted the game 4-4 in the sixth with Miller's solo shot over the left field fence. They overtook the lead 5-4 later in the frame when Goodwin scored when Sawyer Satrom (R-So., IF, Portland, N.D.) reached on an error.

The score remained 5-4 in favor of the Golden Eagles until the eighth when they ran into trouble. A Montgomery single scored Gannon Andrews to tie the game 5-5. The Pride took the lead back 6-5 when Hayden Mautlich hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Jones. Purdue Northwest extended the lead to 7-5 when Puplava singled to right field to score Puplava.

Minnesota Crookston was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth as the Pride picked up the 7-5 victory.

The Golden Eagles return to Minnesota and will get back to NSIC play with a four-game series commencing Friday, March 22 at Concordia University-St. Paul.
