COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a 14-4 victory over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in the final game of the series Friday, February 9 at Mountain Lion Park in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Golden Eagles were slated to play two on Friday, but the second game was canceled due to weather conditions. Minnesota Crookston improved to 1-2 with the win, while the Mountain Lions dropped to 2-4 with Friday's loss.
Minnesota Crookston had a combination of strong offense, and pitching Friday. The Golden Eagles notched 17 hits, including home runs from Teddy Giefer (Sr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.), and Mitch Goodwin (R-Sr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.). Josh Dykhoff (So., RHP, Wadena, Minn.) went 3-of-5, with one RBI, and one run scored. Golden Spikes Award Watch List member Jake Hjelle (R-Sr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) went 2-of-6, with one RBI, and two runs scored. Giefer was 2-of-6, with three RBIs, and two runs scored. Danny Wensloff (Sr., C/OF, Roseau, Minn.) finished 2-of-6, with one RBI, and a run scored. Sawyer Satrom (R-So., IF, Portland, N.D.) went 3-of-5, with an RBI, and two runs scored, while Goodwin was 2-of-4, with three RBIs, and two runs scored.
Dykhoff picked up the win on the mound, tossing five scoreless innings in the three-hitter. Dykhoff struck out six, with one walk. Brody Sorenson tossed three innings, allowing four runs, on four hits. Joey Connelly (So., LHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.) threw a scoreless ninth inning.
The loss went to Marko Sipila, who allowed six earned runs, on six hits in four innings.
Minnesota Crookston jumped out quickly with three runs in the top of the first. Ben Goelz (R-Sr., OF, Maple Lake, Minn.) scored on a passed ball to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0. Hjelle then delivered a double to plate Dykhoff to extend the lead to 2-0. They rounded out the scoring as Hjelle scored on a Giefer groundout.
Giefer delivered two more RBIs on a home run in the third, scoring himself, and Hjelle to make it 5-0.
In the fourth frame, Goodwin added a solo shot to widen the gap to 6-0. Goelz scored on another passed ball to make it 7-0.
A Danny Wensloff single pushed the lead to 8-0 in the fifth, plating Caden Headlee (R-Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.). Satrom then delivered a single, scoring Giefer to make it 9-0.
In the seventh stanza, Kobe Senn (R-So., IF, Fargo, N.D.) singled in Satrom to push the lead to 10-0. Goodwin scored on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to 11-0. The seventh-inning scoring was rounded out with a Dykhoff double to plate Senn.
In the eighth frame, Goodwin singled in Satrom, and Danny Wensloff to extend the lead to 14-0.
UCCS was able to get runs back in the eighth. Dillon Vroman singled in Colton Trudeau to cut the deficit to 14-1. Alec Gomez rounded out the scoring with a three-run shot, scoring himself, Vroman, and Kasey Campbell to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 14-4.
Minnesota Crookston opens NSIC play February 21 in Fort Scott, Kan., against Wayne State College.
