FORT SCOTT, Kan. - Wayne State College scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team 10-4 Wednesday, February 21 at the LaRoche Baseball Complex in Fort Scott, Kan.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 1-3 (0-1 NSIC) following their conference opener. Wayne State improved to 5-0 (5-0 NSIC) with the victory.
The Golden Eagles tallied nine hits Wednesday. Teddy Giefer (Sr., 1B, Cortland, Minn.) continued his great start to the season, going 3-of-4, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Josh Dykhoff (So., RHP/DH, Wadena, Minn.) was 2-of-5. Kodi Miller (Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) went 1-of-3, with a run scored, while Mitch Goodwin (R-Sr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) was 1-of-3, with a run scored, and an RBI.
Wayne State tallied 13 hits. Quinn McCafferty went 2-of-4, with four RBIs, and a run scored. Braden Cannon went 2-of-2, with two RBIs, and two runs scored. Max Heard finished 2-of-4, with two runs scored, while Chase Douglas was 2-of-4, with a run scored.
Minnesota Crookston loaded up the bases in the first with walks offered to Kobe Senn (R-So., IF, Fargo, N.D.) and Sawyer Satrom (R-So., IF, Portland, Minn.), and a single from Giefer, but Corbin Kirk got out of the inning unscathed.
Wayne State took the lead 2-0 in the bottom of the second, guided by a Cannon two-run blast to plate himself, and Alex Calabrese.The Wildcats pushed their advantage to 3-0 when McCafferty walked with the bases loaded, driving in Max Heard.Â
Miller got the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when he scored on a wild pitch. The U of M Crookston trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a solo home run from Goodwin.Â
Minnesota Crookston overtook the lead 4-3 in the top of the fifth when Giefer sent one over the center field fence, scoring himself, and Caden Headlee (R-Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.)
Wayne State loaded the bases to open the sixth inning. Kaden Young singled, followed by a walk offered to Cannon, and an infield single by Heard. Isaac Wensloff (So., RHP, Roseau, Minn.) got closer to getting out of the inning with a strikeout of Chase Douglas. However, Carter Thomas responded with a single, bringing in Cannon, and Young to provide the Wildcats with a 5-4 lead. The Wildcats widened the gap to 7-4 when McCafferty doubled in Heard, and Thomas. Colin Lynam hit one over the fence, scoring himself, and McCafferty to give the Wildcats a 9-4 lead. The home run chased Wensloff from the game. Jacob Mathiason (R-Jr., RHP, Rockford, Minn.) got the final two outs to get Minnesota Crookston out of further damage.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 10-4 in the eighth as McCafferty singled in Douglas.
Minnesota Crookston started the top of the ninth with a single from Senn, and a walk to Goodwin. However, Wayne State got out of the inning with three outs in a row to preserve the 10-4 win.
Jake Osowski (R-Sr., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.) got the start and tossed four innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Osowski struck out two, and walked two. Isaac Wensloff suffered the loss, allowing six runs in 1.1 innings, with two strikeouts, and a walk. Mathiason was strong in relief, allowing one run, on two hits, in 2.2 innings. Mathiason walked three.
Kirk started and went five innings, allowing four runs, on six hits. The win went to Calabrese, who came on and tossed an inning, allowing no runs. She struck out one, and walked one.Â
The Golden Eagles will play two games with the Wildcats at 12 and 2 p.m., Thursday, February 22 in Fort Scott, Kan.Â
