Golden Eagles Win Final Game Heading Into WCCHA Tournament

2/3/2024 10:15:00 PM

Minneapolis, Minn. - With the WCCHA Tournament looming, the Golden Eagles would turn their attention in net to Adam Goody (Fr., G, Airdrie, Alberta) for the final matchup, while the Golden Gophers would call upon Owen Peterson.

It only took two minutes for Tyler Zahradka (Sr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) to get a goal on the board, as he was assisted by Tristan Morneault (Jr., F, Dieppe, New Brunswick) and Zach Larson (Sr., D, Grand Forks, N.D.) The Golden Gophers would even the score just 10 minutes later with a goal by Tyler Bishop. With 7:19 to play in the first period, Dalston Kelly (Fr., F, Grafton, N.D.) would fire home his sixth career goal, as he was assisted by Dylan Borseth (R-Sr., F, Williston, N.D.) and the Golden Eagles took back the lead.

The second period was action packed in goals. The Golden Eagles scored the first one of the period as Fox Dodds (Jr., F, Watford City, N.D.) netted his 21st goal of the year with an assist from Anthony Foster (Fr., F, Warroad, Minn.) Foster now holds the record for most points by a rookie in Golden Eagle hockey history. The Golden Gophers would answer back twice with goals from Tate Tourtillott and Michael Scherer. The two clubs would head into the third frame at 3-3.

In the third period, the two teams would go back and forth on shots. Goody and Peterson were the stars of the period as they both shut down every chance possible. The Golden Eagles and Golden Gophers would head to overtime at 3-3.

In a crazy overtime, with 11 total shots, Adam Goody had a signature moment. Goody stopped all eight of the overtime shots he faced as he kept the game even. With just 30 seconds remaining, Tyler Zahradka scored a goal that he will never forget. In a game that means a lot for the Golden Eagles in terms of standings, it was the senior forward who has been with the club since its inaugural season. He was not the lone senior on the goal, Zach Larson would tally the primary assist on the game winning goal, with the young gun Anthony Foster collecting his 44th point of his rookie season.

The Golden Eagles will play Friday, February 9th, in their opening WCCHA Tournament Game.
