Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. - Black Hills State University outscored the University of Minnesota Crookston 25-17 in the fourth quarter to pick up a 70-62 win Thursday, November 21 at the Donald E. Young Center.
The Golden Eagles tied the game 45-45 late in the third quarter after edging the Yellowjackets 16-8 in the third stanza, but Black Hills State controlled the final frame to pick up Thursday's win.
Minnesota Crookston dropped to 1-4 with the loss, while the Yellowjackets improved to 4-2 with the victory. Black Hills State wins the first-ever game with the Golden Eagles.
Minnesota Crookston looked to 27 points from Emma Miller (Jr., G, Albertville, Minn.) on 11-of-24 from the field, and 5-of-10 from distance. Miller moved to eighth all-time in scoring, surpassing Micaela Noga. Miller has 1,118 career points. She needs 87 points to move past Brittani Wiese for seventh all-time at Minnesota Crookston. Miller finished with a double-double with 10 rebounds. She finished with three assists.Â
Riley Jenkins (R-So., G/F, Galesburg, Ill.) chipped in 12 points, and five boards on 4-of-8 from the field, and 2-of-4 from distance. Rayna Klejeski (So., F, Barnum, Minn.) added seven points off the bench. Nicole Hernandez (R-Sr., F/C, Oak Creek, Wis.) finished with six points, and seven boards.
The Golden Eagles shot 23-of-62 for 37.1 percent from the field. Minnesota Crookston went 10-of-24 for 41.7 percent from deep, and a perfect 6-of-6 from the stripe. Minnesota Crookston was outrebounded 47-36, including allowing 16 offensive boards to the Yellowjackets. The Golden Eagles had six assists to 15 turnovers.
Black Hills State was guided by Morgan Hammerbeck with 27 points on 8-of-15 from the field, and 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. Haylee Weathersby added 19 points, and eight boards. Kalla Bertram finished with 16 points, seven boards, and four assists.
The Yellowjackets shot 26-of-68 for 38.2 percent. They went 3-of-15 from beyond the arc for 20 percent. They were 15-of-20 from the stripe for 75.0 percent.
Minnesota Crookston held a 7-6 lead early in the first quarter following a Jenkins lay-in. Black Hills State countered with a 6-0 run, as a Bertram basket made it 12-7. The Golden Eagles pulled within 13-12 on a Klejeski trey with 2:46 remaining in the first. The Yellowjackets went into the quarter break up 19-14 after a bucket from Weathersby.
The Golden Eagles knotted the game 21-21 on a Miller jumper with 7:43 remaining in the second stanza. Black Hills State countered with a 5-0 run to make it 26-21 on a Hammerbeck trey. Minnesota Crookston pulled within 26-25 on a Klejeski basket. A pair of Hope Dudycha (R-So., G, Austin, Minn.) free throws kept the game within one (28-27) with 2:39 left in the second quarter. The Yellowjackets ended the second frame on a 9-2 run to go into the locker room ahead 37-29.
Minnesota Crookston came out of the locker room on fire, as they went on a 12-2 run, taking a 41-39 lead on a Miller drive with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter. Black Hills State countered with a 6-0 run to take a 45-41 advantage on a Weathersby bucket. Minnesota Crookston knotted the game 45-45 on a Dudycha shot with 1:03 left in the third, to send the game knotted up into the quarter intermission.
The Yellowjackets opened the fourth stanza with a 6-0 run, as a Hammerbeck bucket made it 51-45. The Golden Eagles got the deficit down to 53-50 with a Hernandez trey with 5:51 remaining. Black Hills State responded with a 12-0 run, making it 65-50 on a Weathersby basket. The Golden Eagles got the deficit down to 66-59 on a Jenkins three with 39 seconds left, but it would be too late as they fell 70-62.
Minnesota Crookston will continue their trip in the Black Hills with a tilt with South Dakota Mines Friday, November 22 at 6:30 p.m. C.T.
