St. Paul, Minn. – Blaize Sagna (Jr., G, London, England) scored 27 second half points and
Aguek Deng (Jr., F, Des Moines, Iowa) made a huge block with less than five seconds left to lead the Golden Eagles to an 84-82 win over Concordia-St. Paul in NSIC play.
The win for the Golden Eagles avenges an earlier season loss to CSP and moves to 6-14 (3-11 NSIC).
Deng would start the game almost as good as he would later go on to finish it, scoring the game's first four points for a quick 4-0 Golden Eagle lead.
CSP would answer with back-to-back three's for a two-point lead, but the Golden Eagles would go on a 5-0 scamper with baskets from
Reid Grant (Jr., G, Johnston, Iowa) and
Ben Hoverson (Jr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.).
From there, the Golden Bears would later take a 19-12 lead, but
Jordan Mitchell (R-Jr., F, Columbus, Ohio) would halt the run with a crafty finish near the rim.
With the Golden Eagles down by eight midway through the half, Grant would go on an 8-0 run by himself, helping the Golden Eagles knot the game up at 24.
CSP would eventually take a 37-28 lead, their largest lead of the half, but the Golden Eagles would answer with a 9-2 run to close out the half to end the half down by just a pair.
Early in the second half would see the Golden Bears take a 45-39 lead, but Minnesota Crookston would score on four straight possessions with buckets from Deng and Sagna to take a 47-45 lead.
CSP would once again answer with a 9-0 run for a 54-47 lead. Much like they had all night, the Golden Eagles would answer yet again, cutting the lead to just two with a quick 5-0 run.
Minnesota Crookston would take a 61-59 lead on a Sagna jumper, which would be a lead the Golden Eagles would never relinquish.
A Sagna three would give the maroon and gold a 70-64 lead and then minutes later,
De'Antray Hughes (R-Sr., F, New Orleans, La.) would give the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the night with a layup in the paint.
Mario Adams (Fr., F, Rosemount, Minn.) would give the Golden Eagles a huge bucket with a dunk in the paint and Sagna would score the last field goal for the Golden Eagles at the 2:24 mark left in the game, which turned out to be a huge basket.
Reid Patterson would make a three for the Golden Bears with 1:38 left, but that would be the last time the Golden Bears would see the ball go through the hoop.
Deng would give the Golden Eagles a two point lead by going 1-2 at the charity stripe and then would seal the game with a huge block on Marcus Skeete with five seconds remaining.
Sagna led the way with 34 points on 14-22 from the field and 4-7 from long range. Sagna also added five rebounds and five assists. Grant finished with 18 points and five rebounds, while Deng scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and four blocks, continuing to lead the league in blocks. Hoverson finished with six points, as did Hughes.
The big number was the points in the paint, as the Golden Eagles doubled up the Golden Bears, 48-32.
