CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team was outscored 35-12 in the first quarter as the Golden Eagles fell 99-62 to Southwest Minnesota State University Saturday, January 20. Minnesota Crookston was only outscored 64-50 the final three quarters.
Minnesota Crookston dropped to 9-9 (6-6 NSIC) with Saturday's loss to the Mustangs. The Golden Eagles are tied for eighth in the NSIC standings. Southwest Minnesota State improved to 12-6 (10-2 NSIC). The Mustangs are on a 10-game winning streak.
The Golden Eagles were guided by 21 points from Emma Miller (So., G, Albertville, Minn.) on 6-of-19 from the field, 3-of-9 from beyond the arc, and 6-of-8 from the foul line. Janie Tormanen (So., F/C, Menahga, Minn.) added 10 points and five rebounds. Natalie Mikrot (So., G, Willow River, Minn.) tied her career high with nine points. Rayna Klejeski (Fr., F, Barnum, Minn.) added 10 points and five boards.
The Golden Eagles shot 22-of-59 for 37.3 percent. Minnesota Crookston went 5-of-20 from beyond the arc for 25.0 percent. The Golden Eagles went 13-of-24 from the stripe for 54.2 percent.
The Mustangs had five players score in double figures. Madison Gehloff led the way with 18 points and six boards. Hannah Parsley and Sam Wall each had 17 points. Peyton Blandin finished with 12 points, while Bri Stoltzmann added 11 points. Stoltzmann and Kennadi Buchholz each had six rebounds.
Southwest Minnesota State shot 37-of-69 for 53.6 percent. The Mustangs went 11-of-34 for 32.4 percent from behind the three-point line. They were 14-of-18 for 77.8 percent from the foul line. Southwest Minnesota State outrebounded Minnesota Crookston 42-33 Saturday. The Golden Eagles finished with 20 turnovers to 10 for the Mustangs. The Mustangs scored 48 points in the paint, and 28 points off turnovers.
Southwest Minnesota State started the game with a 23-4 lead and didn't look back despite a more solid effort in the final three quarters for the Golden Eagles.
Minnesota Crookston returns to action Friday, January 26 at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
