Minnesota Crookston Soccer Holds Strong in First Half; Falls 4-0 to Warriors

WINONA, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team was defeated 4-0 by Winona State University Friday, September 29 at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium in Winona, Minn. The Golden Eagles held the Warriors to just one goal in the first 45 minutes, but Winona State tallied three more goals in the final stanza to win 4-0.

Minnesota Crookston dropped to 0-8 (0-4 NSIC) with Friday's loss. Winona State improved to 2-3-3 (1-2-2 NSIC) with the victory, their first in conference play. The Warriors have won the last three games in the series. 

The Golden Eagles were held to four shots, while Winona State had 31. Minnesota Crookston had two shots on goal, compared to 17 for their foes. U of M Crookston was led offensively by Kedin Geremiah (Fr., MF/F, Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Jacqueline Calderon (R-Jr., MF, Indio, Calif.) with shots on goal. Autumn Rabe (Fr., F, Kewaskum, Wis.), and Brooklyn Fischbach (Jr., F, South St. Paul, Minn.) also had shots.

The Warriors scored their first goal in the 10th minute when Quinn Williams scored, off a Reanne Weil helper. The score remained at just 1-0 at the break, due to strong defense for the Golden Eagles.

Winona State broke through again in the 48th minute when Johanna Shubert scored unassisted. In the 59th minute, Shubert scored again, this time off an Abigail Williams assist. The final tally came when Weil found the back of the net off a Catheryn Hudak helper.

In goal, Abby Olsen (Sr., GK, Chisago City, Minn.) had 13 saves, and allowed four goals.

Winona State generated 16 corner kicks, compared to zero for the Golden Eagles. Minnesota Crookston has struggled to generate set pieces in dangerous positions.

The Golden Eagles have held both of their last two opponents to just one goal in the first half. 

Minnesota Crookston heads to Marshall, Minn., to face Southwest Minnesota State Sunday, October 1 at 1 p.m.
