CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team fell 3-0 to the University of Sioux Falls Sunday, September 24 at the U of M Crookston Soccer Field. The Cougars scored a goal in the first half and put an exclamation on the win with a pair of goals late in Sunday's contest.
The game was moved up due to thunderstorms forecasted for the Red River Valley Sunday. Minnesota Crookston dropped to 0-7 (0-3 NSIC) with the loss. USF improved to 1-5 (1-2 NSIC) with the victory.
The goals for USF were the first three of the season. Sioux Falls struck first in the 17
th minute when Hannah Welch found Addison Westermeyer on a cross to make it 1-0.
The game remained at 1-0 and Minnesota Crookston had their chances to tie, however the Cougars pushed the advantage to 2-0 after Mariah Siem scored on a penalty kick after
Abby Olsen (Sr., GK, Chisago City, Minn.) was called for a foul in the box. Sioux Falls put a stamp on the win when Sarah Miller added a tally off a Mara Nelson pass.
Sioux Falls had 20 shots, with 11 on goal. Minnesota Crookston finished with seven shots, five on goal.
Sarah Burgum (So., F, Mandan, N.D.) led U of M Crookston with three shots, two on goal.
Julia Finch (So., D/MF, Woodbury, Minn.), and
Emmah Burnes (Fr., MF, Tulare, Calif.) each had shots on goal.
Greta Saylor (Jr., MF, New Brighton, Minn.) also chipped in a shot on goal.
Abby Olsen (Sr., GK, Chisago City, Minn.) had several great saves Sunday. She finished with eight saves, and three goals allowed. Delani Daubman had a clean sheet, with five saves Sunday.
Minnesota Crookston hits the road to face Winona State University Friday, September 29 at 5 p.m.
