Minnesota Crookston Soccer Falls 3-0 to Upper Iowa


BEMIDJI, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team fell 3-0 to Upper Iowa University in their final non-conference tune-up Sunday, September 10 at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn. 

The Golden Eagles fell to 0-4 with the loss. Upper Iowa improved to 1-3 with the victory. The game was played on a neutral field on the campus of Bemidji State University. 

The Peacocks tallied two goals in the first period, and added a third in the second half. Upper Iowa had 13 shots, with six on goal. Minnesota Crookston finished with five shots, two on goal.

Upper Iowa scored the first tally in the fourth minute when Leah Burck scored off assists from Haylie Hutchinson, and Natalie Lima. Burck's shot drove Emma Stempien (Jr., GK, Plymouth, Mich.) into the goal to make for the first score.

The Peacocks added a second score in the 21st minute when Meghan Zwicker scored off a Hutchinson assist. 

Upper Iowa added a final score in the 68th minute. Darci Faichnie scored off helpers from Hutchinson, and Rachyl Benavides.

Hutchinson led the squad with three assists. 

Emmah Burnes (Fr., MF, Tulare, Calif.) guided Minnesota Crookston with two shots. Brooklyn Fischbach (Jr., F, South St. Paul, Minn.), Autumn Rabe (Fr., F, Kewaskum, Wis.), and Greta Saylor (So., MF, New Brighton, Minn.) all had shots for the Golden Eagles.

Stempien suffered the loss after allowing three goals, and making three saves. Upper Iowa University's Isabelle Wagner got the win with the shutout. She made two saves.

The Golden Eagles generated more opportunities in the second half, after defending the majority of the first 45 minutes. Four of Minnesota Crookston's five shots came in the second 45 minutes. 

Minnesota Crookston opens NSIC play Friday, September 15 at 3 p.m., against Bemidji State University.
