Marquette, Mich. – After defeating Lake Superior State in four sets earlier in the day, Minnesota Crookston volleyball was back in action looking for win number two on the day as they took on Northwood University of Midland, Mich.
The Golden Eagles would win set one and set four, but would eventually fall in the fifth set, dropping them to 1-2 on the season.
Set One
Minnesota Crookston would take the momentum of match one of the day into set one against the Timberwolves.
The Golden Eagles would jump out to a quick start with a 1-0 lead after an attacking error on the Timberwolves.
NU would eventually lead 3-2, but the Golden Eagles would score four in a row, capped off by a huge swing from
Maya Jones (Fr., OH, New Braunfels, Texas) for a 6-3 lead.
Minnesota Crookston would continue to build on their lead using outstanding serving and forcing the Timberwolves into errors.
Madison Carsten (Fr., OH, Wadena, Minn.) would continue her outstanding day with a kill for an eight point lead at 20-12, their largest of the first set.
The Timberwolves would continue to chip away.
A big turning point came when Northwood thought they scored a point on a big swing, but the referees convened and determined that the Wolves were over the net, making it 23-20, as opposed to 22-21.
The Golden Eagles would go onto win the set by two.
Set Two
Much like in the first match of the day against Lake Superior State, the Golden Eagles would fall behind early in the set and could never find their footing.
The Timberwolves would win set two, 25-12.
Set Three
Much like in set two, set number three would be all Timberwolves.
They would win the third set 25-11 and go up two sets to one in the match
Set Four
Once again, the maroon and gold would show some resiliency.
Early on in the set, it seemed like neither team could gain any footing.
The score would be tied at 15, but a kill from
Emma Malek (Fr., OH/RS, Plainfield, Ill.) and a kill from Jones would give the Golden Eagles a 17-15 lead.
The Golden Eagles would lead 23-19 and a kill from
Mara Weisensel (Sr., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) and a service ace from Jones would give the Golden Eagles the set four win, giving us a fifth set up to 15.
Set Five
In a race to 15, the team that gets off to a fast start will be in favor the entire way. That's exactly what the Timberwolves did.
The maroon and gold would take an early 2-1 on an
Audrey Cariveau (So., OH, Kevil, Kent.) service ace, but the Timberwolves would regain the lead and win the set 15-7 and the match, three sets to two.
