St. Cloud, Minn. – Before a nasty storm hits northern Minnesota through the midweek, Minnesota Crookston softball was able to get two games in against Northern State at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud.
Minnesota Crookston used six Northern State errors in game one to win 6-3. In game two, the Wolves returned the favor and shutout the Golden Eagles, 7-0.
Minnesota Crookston moves to 13-16 (1-3 NSIC).
Game One
NSU would jump out to a quick start in the bottom of the first, scoring on an Avarie Eagle RBI groundout.
Whitnee Curry (So., IF/OF, Lincoln, Neb.) would get the Golden Eagles on the board in the top of the third, singling to right field.
Maddie Shwaluk (Jr., OF, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) would score on an error by Eagle.
The Wolves would regain the lead in the bottom of the third on a Claire Zyblut two-run single.
Minnesota Crookston would put up a crooked number in the fifth, giving them the lead for good. Curry would reach on an error, allowing Shwaluk to score once again.
Paige Shwaluk (Jr., MIF, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) would trail her twin sister and advance to third.
The next batter,
Alina Avalos (Sr., IF, Riverside, Calif.) would drive in runs 27 and 28 on the season, giving the Golden Eagles a 4-3 lead.
Shaelyn Grant (Jr., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) would deliver the big knock, a two-run home run for a 6-3 lead, which would be the final.
Minnesota Crookston would have seven hits in the game, including another two hit day from Curry, her second in as many days. Curry, Avalos and Grant would combine to drive in the six runs, with two runs apiece.
Thayda Houser (Jr., P, Seymour, Iowa) earned her sixth win of the season, giving up three earned runs in 3.2 innings of work, while allowing zero hits.
Evie Stuck (So., P/OF, Papillion, Neb.) finished the game in relief, going 3.1 innings, giving up zero runs on four hits.
Game Two
Game two would feature a dominant pitching performance in the circle by Northern State's Meghan Anderson, who shut out the Golden Eagles.
The Wolves would score two runs in the second and third and then add some more insurance in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs.
Minnesota Crookston would finish with three hits in the 7-0 loss in game two. Avalos, Curry and Grant each went 1-3 in the game. The Golden Eagles left five runners on base.
In the circle,
Charlotte Dombrowski (Fr., P/OF, Valparaiso, Ind.) drew the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season. Dombrowski gave up four earned runs on five hits, while walking four hitters. Stuck came on in relief again and gave up a run in an inning of work.
What's Next
Minnesota Crookston will be back in action this Friday and Saturday, on the road for one final NSIC series with Upper Iowa, who will leave the NSIC next season. First pitch with the Peacocks on Friday is set for 2 P.M., as part of a doubleheader.
