CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston split with Minot State University Thursday, April 27. The Golden Eagles picked up home runs from
Teddy Giefer (Jr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.) and
Mitch Goodwin (Jr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Beavers 2-1 in the first game. In game two, the Beavers came through at the plate with 13 runs on 18 hits in a 13-3 win in the second tilt.
Minnesota Crookston moved to 30-16 (20-8 NSIC) with the split. The Golden Eagles reached 30 or more wins for the first time in program history. UMN Crookston tied their school-record for conference wins in a season at 20. Minot State moved to 26-13 (17-10 NSIC) with the win.
Game One
The Golden Eagles edged the Beavers in the first game with the help of home runs from Goodwin and Giefer in the sixth stanza. Goodwin had the go-ahead hit for the second time in as many games as he had the walk-off double in Monday's second game against Northern State University.
Matt Nelson (R-Sr., RHP, Afton, Minn.) was outstanding in the victory. Nelson went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out four, and had no walks in the complete game.
Bryant Bagshaw picked up the loss after allowing two runs in 5.1 innings, on seven hits. Bagshaw had eight strikeouts and five walks. Garrett Nicholson pitched a scoreless 0.2 innings.
The Golden Eagles were guided by
Josh Dykhoff (Fr., RHP/1B, Wadena, Minn.), who went 2-of-3.
Mike Hallquist (Jr., 3B, Fargo, N.D.) was 1-of-1, and reached on two more walks. Giefer went 1-of-2, with an RBI and a run scored. Goodwin was 1-of-2, with an RBI and a run scored.
Minot State took the 1-0 lead in the first on a Gunnar Kozlowitz sacrifice fly to score Brent Riddle.
Minnesota Crookston had several opportunities throughout the next five innings but stranded eight on base. The Golden Eagles finally broke through with home runs from Giefer and Goodwin.
Nelson retired the final three in a row in the top of the seventh to preserve the 2-1 win.
Game Two
The Golden Eagles struggled to get their bats going in the 13-3 loss in the second tilt. Minnesota Crookston was limited to three runs on three hits, while Minot State scored 13 runs on 18 hits.
Josh Dykhoff suffered the loss, allowing six runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Brody Sorenson (Jr., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) came on and allowed three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.
Derin Gaudette (So., RHP, New York Mills, Minn.) allowed just one earned run on three hits in three innings.
Jackson Schneider (R-Sr., RHP, Forest Lake, Minn.) allowed two runs on five hits in an inning.
Tad Scherbenske (Jr., RHP, Rapid City, S.D.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Jonah Prokott picked up the win after allowing no runs in 2.1 innings. Prokott struck out three, and walked three. Dominick Parkhurst started and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
The Golden Eagles looked to
Jake Hjelle (R-Jr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.), who went 1-of-4, with one RBI and one run.
Sawyer Satrom (R-Fr., IF, Portland, N.D.) scored two runs. Headlee went 1-of-4.
Matt Nunn (Sr., C, Edina, Minn.) went 1-of-4.
Riddle led the game off with a solo home run to make it 1-0.
In the second, Derrick Winn hit a two-run home run, driving in him, and Cameron Carr.
In the bottom of the second, Hjelle hit his 15th home run of the season, while Satrom scored on an error to cut the Minot State advantage to 4-2.
Javier Gutierrez picked up home runs in the third and fifth innings for the Beavers.
Minnesota Crookston's third run came when Satrom scored on a
Danny Wensloff (Jr., OF/C, Roseau, Minn.) fielder's choice.
The Golden Eagles remain in third place in the NSIC standings. They have an important series in their home finale commencing Saturday, April 29 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., against Minnesota State University. The Mavericks are currently in second place.
