Minnesota Crookston Walks Off with Two Wins Sunday to Earn Series Victory Over Minnesota State

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team used two walk-off home runs Sunday, April 30 to pick up the series win over Minnesota State University on Senior weekend at the UMN Crookston Baseball Field. Mike Hallquist (Jr., 3B, Fargo, N.D.) delivered a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to deliver a 7-6 victory in game one. In game two, senior Zeke Hass (OF, Eaton, Colo.) hit a three-run home run to send the Golden Eagles to a 12-0 win over the Mavericks. Minnesota State won the final game of the series 9-4 in a game that was called due to darkness but was an official game because at least five innings were completed in the seven-inning tilt.

Minnesota Crookston improved to 32-17 (22-9 NSIC) with the two wins. The Golden Eagles set their school-record for conference wins in a season. Minnesota State is 30-13 (20-8 NSIC) after the series finale win. The Mavericks remain in second place in the NSIC, with a slight advantage over the Golden Eagles. Minnesota Crookston clinched a spot in the NSIC Tournament with two wins. Wayne State College, who is in eighth place currently, can't catch Minnesota Crookston.

Game One
The Golden Eagles picked up the walk-off 7-6 win as Hallquist sent his league-high 17th home run over the fence to give Minnesota Crookston the victory. The game was a continuation of Saturday's tilt that began but was halted due to rain in the top of the third innings. The two teams played the final five innings Sunday starting at 1 p.m.

Jake Dykhoff (R-Sr., RHP, Wadena, Minn.) picked up his team-high seventh win. He came on in relief for UMN Crookston for the second time this season. Dykhoff went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked three. Alex Koep (Sr., LHP, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) started the game Saturday and went two innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out five.

Dylan Gotto suffered the loss after allowing four runs on six hits. Gotto struck out eight and walked one.

Minnesota Crookston had seven hits in the game. Josh Dykhoff (Fr., RHP/1B, Wadena, Minn.) went 2-of-3, with one RBI and two runs scored. Jake Hjelle (R-Jr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) was 2-of-2, with two RBIs and a run scored. Hallquist went 1-of-3, with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Mavericks went ahead 1-0-when Ryan Wickman sjngled in Aidan Byrne in the top of the first.

The Golden Eagles played small ball in the bottom of the first. Danny Wensloff (Jr., OF/C, Roseau, Minn.) scored on a Hjelle sacrifice fly. Josh Dykhoff scored on a Caden Headlee (Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.) groundout to make it 2-1. The final run in the first game came when Hallquist scored on a wild pitch.

The Mavericks came back in the third, the first inning played Sunday. Byrne homered to right field, scoring him, and Matt Fleischhacker knotting the game at 3-3.

The Golden Eagles took the lead back in the bottom of the third with Josh Dykhoff's 12th home run of the season. Hjelle followed suit two batters later with his 16th home run to give UMN Crookston a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Jackson Hauge homered to score him, and Louis Magers to knot the game at 5-5. The Mavericks took the 6-5 lead when Byrne singled in Mikey Gottschalk.
The Golden Eagles walked off with the win when Hallquist left no doubt with a ball over the right field fence, scoring him, and Paxton Nelson (Sr., IF, Spicer, Minn.) as Minnesota Crookston picked up their second-ever win over the Mavericks.

Game Two
The Golden Eagles picked up their second walk-off of the day in day two as Hass came through in his final day at home for UMN Crookston, as the senior hit a three-run shot over the right field fence to give Minnesota Crookston the 12-0 win. The Golden Eagles rallied down 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth, scoring 10 runs in the final three innings to pick up the victory.

Conner Richardson (R-Sr., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) improved to 3-3 with the win in relief. Richardson allowed two runs on three hits in one inning. Jake Osowski (R-Jr., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.) started and put up three-straight zeros on the scoreboard. However, he ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth. Osowski allowed seven earned runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. He struck out three and walked four. Jakob Wiirre (Sr., RHP, Mims, Fla.) pitched a scoreless 0.2 innings. Jackson Schneider (R-Sr., RHP, Forest Lake, Minn.) also pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Jack Zigan suffered the loss after allowing the game-winning home run, along with four runs on four hits in one inning. Chandler Fochs started the game and allowed four runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.

Minnesota Crookston utilized hot bats late in the game as they notched 12 runs on 17 hits. Danny Wensloff got UMN Crookston going in the leadoff spot, going 3-of-3, with three runs scored. Hallquist finished 2-of-3, with two RBIs and a run scored. Teddy Giefer (Jr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.) went 2-of-4, with a run scored. Hass was 3-of-4, with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Sawyer Satrom (R-Fr., IF, Portland, N.D.) was 3-of-4, with two runs scored.

Minnesota Crookston opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when Hallquist tripled to plate Danny Wenslof.

Minnesota State took the 5-1 lead in the fourth. Jackson Hauge hit a two-RBI single, scoring Wickman, and Byrne. Gottschalk then sent one over the fence, scoring him, Hauge, and Adam Weed.

The Golden Eagles pulled within 5-2 in the fourth with a Hass RBI double, plating Giefer.

The Mavericks extended their lead to 8-2 in the fifth. Byrne scored on a wild pitch, followed by a two RBI double from Gottschalk.

Minnesota Crookston cut into the deficit in the fifth. Hjelle singled in Wensloff to trim the Maverick lead to 8-3. Headlee then doubled, scoring Hjelle to cut it to 8-4.

In the sixth, Satrom opened the scoring by crossing the plate on a wild pitch. Nelson then singled in Hass to cut the deficit to 8-6. A Josh Dykhoff single plated Nelson to bring UMN Crookston within 8-7. The Golden Eagles knotted the game at 8-8 when Hallquist doubled in Danny Wensloff. UMN Crookston took the lead on a Hjelle sacrifice fly, scoring Hallquist.

The lead did not last long as the Mavericks overtook the advantage in the top of the seventh. Gottschalk doubled in Weed to tie it 9-9. Minnesota State took the 10-9 lead when Nick Baker singled in Gottschalk.

The Golden Eagles came through again though as Hass left little doubt with a shot over the right field fence, scoring Satrom, and Connor Bushbaum (R-Fr., OF, Saginaw, Minn.).

Game Three
Minnesota Crookston sought the three-game sweep in Sunday's tripleheader, but the Mavericks held off the Golden Eagles for the 9-4 win in a game called due to darkness shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Brody Sorenson (Jr., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) got the start and allowed one earned run on four hits in two innings. He struck out one and walked two. Derin Gaudette (So., RHP, New York Mills, Minn.) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on one hit. Richardson pitched for the second time Sunday, going 0.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit. Isaac Wensloff (Fr., RHP, Roseau, Minn.) pitched a scoreless inning, as did Nate Grafsgaard (Jr., RHP, Devils Lake, N.D.).

The win went to Spencer Wright, who pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits. He struck out nine and walked one.

The Golden Eagles were led in game three by Hjelle, who was 2-of-3, with two RBIs and a run scored. Matt Nunn (Sr., C, Edina, Minn.) was 1-of-2, with an RBI. Satrom was 1-of-2, with a run scored.

Minnesota State took a 1-0 lead in the first when Hauge singled in Byrne.

In the second stanza, Adam Schneider hit a sacrifice fly to score Gottschalk to make it 2-0. Later in the frame, Byrne hit a sacrifice fly to score Baker.

Minnesota Crookston pulled within 3-1 when Giefer scored on an error. Satrom later came in on a wild pitch to pull within 3-2.

Minnesota State extended their lead to 4-2 when Hauge scored on an error. A Baker single brought in Weed to push the advantage to 5-2.

Minnesota Crookston pulled within 5-4 when Hjelle tied Hallquist for the NSIC home run lead with his 17th, driving in him, and Hallquist.

However, Minnesota State padded their lead in the fourth when Baker hit a two RBI single, scoring Wickman, and Hauge.

The Mavericks put the stamp on the win in the fifth when Byrne doubled in Hunter Ranweiler, and Fleischaker to push their lead to 9-4.

Minnesota Crookston was unable to make up the deficit before the game was called due to darkness.

Minnesota Crookston played their final games at home Sunday. They will wrap up the regular-season this week on the road. Golden Eagles head to Duluth, Minn., to face the University of Minnesota Duluth Tuesday, May 2 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
