ELKHORN, Neb. – The University of Minnesota Crookston built their win streak to six games with a Sunday sweep of Wayne State College to open NSIC play. The Golden Eagles defeated the Wildcats 6-3 in the first game and used an offensive explosion of 13 runs in the final two innings to pummel Wayne State 21-5 in the second game.
The Golden Eagles improved to 12-8 (2-0 NSIC) with Sunday's win at Frerichs Legion Field in Elkhorn, Neb. The game was relocated to the Omaha area from Wayne, Neb. Wayne State dropped to 6-10 (0-2 NSIC) with the losses. The Golden Eagles have one five of the last six games in the series.
Game One
Jake Dykhoff (R-Sr., RHP, Wadena, Minn.) built on his recent performance on the bump by pitching a complete game in Sunday's 6-3 opening game victory. Dykhoff allowed just three runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked just three in the tilt.
Jake Dykhoff has allowed just three runs over the last 21 innings, striking out 25 and walking just seven.
Corbin Kirk suffered the loss for the Wildcats after allowing four earned runs on four hits. Kirk struck out seven and walked five.
Minnesota Crookston was held to five hits in Sunday's opener, but they scored six runs. The Golden Eagles walked seven times.
Caden Headlee (Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.) guided UMN Crookston, going 2-of-3 with one RBI and a run scored.
Mike Hallquist (Jr., 3B, Fargo, N.D.) went 1-of-2, with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Josh Dykhoff (Fr., 1B/RHP, Wadena, Minn.) finished 1-of-3, with two runs scored.
The Golden Eagles jumped on the scoreboard in the third with a three-run home run from Hallquist, his sixth of the season.
Minnesota Crookston added two runs in the fifth. Headlee opened it up with a single to left field, plating
Josh Dykhoff.
Sawyer Satrom (R-Fr., IF, Portland, N.D.) reached on an error, allowing Headlee to score.
Wayne State trimmed the deficit to 5-2 with a two-run blast from Carter Thomas, driving in himself and Cade Lynam.
The Wildcats got another run back in the sixth when Trey Wells hit a solo shot over the fence in right center to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 5-3.
Minnesota Crookston added a security run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Satrom, scoring Hallquist.
Game Two
The Golden Eagles had an offensive showcase in Sunday's second game as the team hit an amazing six home runs in one game to propel the 21-5 win. The Golden Eagles went into the seventh with an 8-5 advantage, but scored 13 runs in the final two frames, including a grand slam.
Minnesota Crookston was lifted by two home runs from
Jake Hjelle (R-Jr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.), who went 4-of-4, with four RBIs and two runs scored. Hallquist hit his seventh home run of the season, he finished 3-of-5, with four RBIs, and two runs scored.
Josh Dykhoff was 1-of-4, with four RBIs, and three runs scored. Satrom was 2-of-4, with three runs scored.
Teddy Giefer (Jr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.) went 3-of-3, with two RBIs, and four runs scored.
Ben Goelz (Jr., OF, Maple Lake, Minn.) was 2-of-5, with three RBIs, and three runs scored. Goelz,
Josh Dykhoff, Hallquist, Hjelle, and Giefer all hit balls over the fence in the second tilt.
Alex Koep (Jr., LHP, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) started and went four innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Koep struck out seven and walked five.
Brody Sorenson (Jr., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) had a great outing out of the bullpen to pick up his second win. Sorenson tossed four innings of shutout baseball, on just one hit. He struck out three and walked one.
Ryan Obrecht suffered the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.
UMN Crookston opened the game with Hjelle's fifth home run of the season, driving in himself and Hallquist to put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-0.
Minnesota Crookston pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second with a Giefer solo shot.
Wayne State got the three runs back in the second. Kyler Essink scored on a wild pitch to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 3-1. Noah Strizek delivered an RBI single to plate Nate Cunningham. The Wildcats knotted the tilt at 3-3 when Quinn McCafferty singled in Cannon.
The Golden Eagles took the lead back in the third with Hjelle's second blast of the game, as UMN Crookston went ahead 4-3.
In the fourth,
Josh Dykhoff hit a three-run home run to drive in himself, Giefer, and Satrom to push the Golden Eagle advantage 7-3.
Wayne State trimmed the deficit to 7-5 with a two-run home run from McCafferty, driving in himself, and Gannon.
The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 8-5 with a Goelz solo home run.
Minnesota Crookston then lit a fire offensively in the seventh commencing with a Goelz double down the line, scoring Satrom, and Giefer. Hjelle then walked with the bases loaded, scoring Goelz. A Headlee sacrifice fly scored
Josh Dykhoff to make it 12-5.
UMN Crookston continued their offensive showcase in the eighth.
Mitch Goodwin (Jr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) singled to plate Satrom.
Josh Dykhoff then walked with the bases loaded, scoring Giefer. Hallquist continued his historic offensive season with a grand slam, scoring Goelz, Goodwin, and
Josh Dykhoff to push the advantage to 18-5.
Camdin Miller (Jr., IF, Williston, N.D.) scored on a wild pitch to widen the gap to 19-5. A
Chris Bollefer (Jr., C, Centennial, Colo.) double to right center, scored Hass. The final run of the game came in with a Giefer single, plating Bollefer to put the final tally at 21-5.
Minnesota Crookston completes their series with Wayne State Monday, March 20 at 12 p.m. in Elkhorn, Neb.
