ELKHORN, Neb. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a sweep of Wayne State College (Neb.) with a 13-2 victory over the Wildcats Monday, March 20 at Frerichs Legion Field in Elkhorn, Neb.
The Golden Eagles continued their home run showcase in the series. UMN Crookston hit seven home runs Sunday. The Golden Eagles added five more home runs in Monday's tilt. Minnesota Crookston improved to 13-8 (3-0 NSIC) with the win. Wayne State dropped to 6-11 (0-3 NSIC) with the loss.
Jake Osowski (R-Jr., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.) secured the win on the bump after tossing six innings and allowing just two runs on four hits. Osowski struck out two and walked two.
Jackson Schneider (R-Sr., RHP, Forest Lake, Minn.) pitched one inning of relief, allowing no runs on no hits.
Nathan Anderson suffered the loss for the Wildcats, allowing seven runs on nine hits in four innings.
Mike Hallquist (Jr., 3B, Fargo, N.D.) leads the NSIC in OPS, runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs, and slugging percentage. He hit his eighth home run of the season Monday. Hallquist went 1-of-5, with an RBI and a run scored.
Jake Hjelle (R-Jr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) went 3-of-5, with two RBIs and three runs scored. Hjelle hit his seventh and eighth home runs of the season.
Ben Goelz (Jr., OF, Maple Lake, Minn.) went 2-of-4, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Goelz hit his third home run.
Mitch Goodwin (Jr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) was 2-of-4, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Goodwin smashed his second home run of the season.
Teddy Giefer (Jr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.) went 2-of-4, with three RBIs.
Caden Headlee (Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.) was 4-of-4, with two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Golden Eagles jumped on the scoreboard in the first when Giefer cleared the bags with a double to drive in Headlee,
Josh Dykhoff (Fr., RHP/1B, Wadena, Minn.), and Goelz.
UMN Crookston extended the lead to 4-0 with Hallquist's solo shot over the fence in left center. Headlee doubled to right center, scoring Hjelle to push the advantage to 5-0.
Wayne State cut the deficit to 5-2 with a Carter Thomas home run, driving in Quinn McCafferty.
The Golden Eagles took the 6-2 advantage in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Goelz to score Goodwin.
In the fifth inning, Hjelle hit a solo home run and Goodwin hit a two-run blast, driving in himself, and
Sawyer Satrom (R-Fr., IF, Portland, N.D.).
The Golden Eagles widened the gap to 10-2 in the sixth when Headlee singled in
Josh Dykhoff. Minnesota Crookston pushed the advantage to 11-2 when Satrom singled in Headlee.
UMN Crookston capped off the day with home runs from Goelz and Hjelle to pick up the 13-2 win.
The Golden Eagles look to continue their great start to the NSIC season Tuesday, March 21 against Winona State University in Mauston, Wis., at 1 and 3 p.m.
