St. Cloud State Comes Back in Second Half to Defeat Minnesota Crookston 68-58

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -  St. Cloud State University outscored the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team 45-25 in the second half to pick up the 68-58 victory. The Golden Eagles took a lead back (48-47) with 8:41 remaining but were outscored 21-10 in the final eight minutes.

Minnesota Crookston ends the regular season with a 10-18 (9-13 NSIC) mark. St. Cloud State improved to 17-9 (14-8 NSIC) with Saturday's victory. The Golden Eagles now await the result of the Northern State University/Minot State University game. If Minot State University loses, the Golden Eagles will head to Southwest Minnesota State University Wednesday, February 22 in Marshall, Minn., for the first round of the NSIC Tournament. If they lose, their season ends.

The Golden Eagles were guided by Bren Fox (R-Sr., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.), who secured her 11th double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fox is just 13 rebounds away from Isieoma Odor's career rebounding mark. Emma Miller (Fr., G, Albertville, Minn.) notched 15 points and four boards. Alex Page (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) finished with nine points, Janie Tormanen (Fr., F, Menahga, Minn.) had seven.

Minnesota Crookston shot 22-of-54 for 40.7 percent from the field. They were just 2-of-14 for 14.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles went 12-of-13 from the line for 92.3 percent. They committed 17 turnovers.

St. Cloud State looked to 20 points from Jada Eggebrecht. Ashley Sawicki added 15 points and five rebounds. Jasmine Litt came off the bench for 12 points and five boards, while Tori Peschel had nine rebounds.

The Huskies shot 22-of-60 from the field for 36.7 percent. St. Cloud State went 9-of-29 for 31.0 percent from beyond the arc. They were 15-of-17 for 88.2 percent from the stripe. The Huskies outrebounded UMN Crookston 38-32, including 14 offensive boards.

The Golden Eagles opened the first quarter with a 6-2 advantage following a Miller jumper. The Huskies responded with a 5-0 run as a Jada Eggebrecht trey gave St. Cloud State the 7-6 advantage. The Golden Eagles countered with a 4-0 rally of their own as a Miller turnaround lay-in gave UMN Crookston the 10-7 advantage with over three minutes left in the stanza. St. Cloud State pulled within 11-10 on a Kelsey Peschel three-pointer. Minnesota Crookston got the trey back with an Abigail Leach (R-Jr., G/F, Wyoming, Minn.) triple to push their lead to 14-10. The Golden Eagles went into the quarter break with a 14-10 lead.

Fox found Nicole Hernandez (Jr., F/C, Oak Creek, Wis.) on the dish to give UMN Crookston the 16-10 advantage out of the quarter break. Fox connected on a jumper to widen the gap to 20-12 with 7:20 left in the second frame. The Golden Eagles continued to build on their momentum as Miller made an old-fashioned three-point play to give UMN Crookston the 23-12 lead. A pair of Tormanen free throws gave the Golden Eagles a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 25-12 with 6:28 left in the second quarter. Minnesota Crookston pushed their lead to 27-12 with a Miller basket, giving them an 11-0 rally. The Huskies came back with triples from Wortz and Eggebrecht to bring the deficit down to 29-20 with 2:45 left in the quarter. UMN Crookston responded with a Page basket to get the lead back out to 31-20. St. Cloud State fired back with a Kelsey Peschel trey to get the Golden Eagle lead down to 31-23. Page countered for UMN Crookston to give the Golden Eagles a 33-23 edge going into the locker room.

Minnesota Crookston opened the third quarter with a Fox jumper to push their lead to 35-23. The Huskies came back with a 6-0 run as a Kelsey Peschel triple and a Sawicki old-fashioned three-point play slashed the deficit to 35-29 with eight minutes left in the third stanza. The Huskies built their run to 10-0 with an Eggebrecht jumper as St. Cloud State trailed just 35-33 with under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. Minnesota Crookston halted the run with a Tormanen lay-in as they moved their lead to 37-33. St. Cloud State came back within two, but Fox responded by powering over her defender for a pair to give UMN Crookston a 39-35 lead. The Huskies responded with three-pointers from Wortz and Morgan Draheim to take the 43-41 advantage with under two minutes remaining in the quarter. St. Cloud State pushed their lead to 45-41 with a Litt putback. The Golden Eagles pulled within 45-44 with a Page old-fashioned three-point play with 55 seconds remaining in the frame. The Huskies went into the quarter break with a 45-44 advantage.

The Golden Eagles opened the fourth quarter with a Hernandez lay-up to take the lead 46-45. Sawicki responded with a putback to give the Huskies the advantage back at 47-46. Hernandez hit a pair at the line to give UMN Crookston the lead back 48-47. Sawicki answered with two of her own at the stripe to tilt the lead in favor of the Huskies 49-48. St. Cloud State pushed their lead to 56-48 after a Litt triple. Minnesota Crookston came back and cut the deficit to five (56-51) with a Miller old-fashioned three-point play. Eggebrecht hit a pair to push the lead for the Huskies to 60-53, but Miller came back with a triple to trim the deficit to 60-56. After a Page turnover, Makenna Vanzant hit 1-of-2 to give St. Cloud State a 61-56 lead. Litt hit 1-of-2 from the stripe to give St. Cloud State a 62-56 advantage. Minnesota Crookston was unable to get crucial points on the offensive end, as the Huskies picked up the 68-58 win.
