MANKATO, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team played their hearts out Friday, October 27 at the Maverick All-Sports Dome, but No. 18 Minnesota State University picked up the 4-0 win. The Golden Eagles held the Mavericks to 1-0 in the first half, however the Mavericks scored three goals in the second stanza.
Minnesota Crookston dropped to 0-16-0 (0-12-0 NSIC) with Friday's loss. Minnesota State improved to 10-2-5 (8-1-4 NSIC). The Golden Eagles played their closest contest with the Mavericks since Sept. 29, 2017. Minnesota Crookston had previously been outscored by Minnesota State 27-0 in the previous four games.
The Mavericks had 36 shots, but only 13 of those were on frame. The Golden Eagles finished with two shots on goal. Minnesota State was led by three shots on goal from Allie Williams, and three from Abigail Rieff.
Minnesota Crookston picked up shots on goal from Sarah Burgum (So., F, Mandan, N.D.), and Jacqueline Calderon (R-Jr., MF, Indio, Calif.).
Abby Olsen (Sr., GK, Chisago City, Minn.) finished with nine saves, with four goals allowed. Mackenzie Rath wasn't tested much on the game, finishing with a clean sheet, and two saves.
The Mavericks tallied their first goal in the third minute when Avery Korsching found Williams for the tally. Minnesota Crookston played a strong rest of the 42 minutes of the second half, as they were tested 17 times as the Mavericks were sending six to eight players at a time on the attack. However Olsen and the back line kept Minnesota State out of the net the rest of the way in the first half.
Minnesota State pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute, with a Kiera Laney goal off an Anna Van Wyngarden helper. The Golden Eagles kept the Mavericks out of the net for the next 18 minutes, until Rieff scored off assists from Mila Rustin, and Addison Clarey. The final tally of the game came in the 89th minute when Aubrey Bahl scored off a helper from Lucy Weninger.
The Golden Eagles will look to take the positives from the match heading into Sunday's 1 p.m. tilt with Concordia University-St. Paul.
