CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team played one of their best games of the season Sunday, October 22, as they held Augustana University to just one goal in a 1-0 loss at home. It marked the fewest goals allowed this season for the Golden Eagle defense. Additionally, it is the fewest goals they have held the Vikings to since October 14, 2017. The Golden Eagles gave up just one goal in 2016 and 2017, and defeated Augustana 1-0 October 5, 2014. Since 2017, Minnesota Crookston had lost by a combined deficit of 24-0 in four meetings, for an average of 6.0 goals per game.
Minnesota Crookston dropped to 0-15 (0-11 NSIC) with Sunday's loss. Augustana improved to 8-4-3 (6-3-2 NSIC) with the victory.
The Golden Eagles honored their seniors Madelyn Teplansky (Sr., MF, Apple Valley, Calif.), Ellerie Tarbox (Sr., D/MF, Carter Lake, Iowa), Jenna Custer (Sr., MF, Queen Creek, Ariz.), and Abby Olsen (Sr., GK, Chisago City, Minn.) prior to the game.
The Golden Eagles have shown a vast improvement in their last three games, giving up just five goals in three games, for an average of 1.7 goals per game. The toughest stretch of the season for U of M Crookston came from September 8-October 6, where they allowed 36 goals for an average of 4.5 goals per tilt.
Minnesota Crookston finished with two shots. Sarah Burgum (So., F, Mandan, N.D.), and Brooklyn Fischbach (Jr., F, South St. Paul, Minn.) accounted for the shots. Augustana notched 15 shots, with eight on goal. It marked just the second time this season (Upper Iowa), where the Golden Eagles held their opponent under 20 shots. Grace Douglas paced the Vikings with three shots on goal.
Augustana scored the lone goal of the game in the 17th minute. Mackenzie Ternes gathered the ball off a Paige Bracker corner kick, Ternes got it to Hope Korte, who found Douglas for the goal.
In goal, Olsen allowed just one goal, her fewest of the season, and picked up seven saves. Augustana's Jillian Barkus had a clean sheet, making one save.
Sunday's game marked the first time where the Golden Eagles had given up just one goal since October 23, 2022 against University of Mary.
