CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team put up one of their best efforts of the 2023 season, but fell 2-1 to Wayne State College Friday, October 20. The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the 2023 season as they scored the first goal of Friday's tilt.
Minnesota Crookston dropped to 0-14 (0-10 NSIC) with the loss. Wayne State improved to 6-6-2 (4-4-2 NSIC). The Wildcats moved to 2-0 against the Golden Eagles this season. The U of M Crookston showed vast improvement against Wayne State this time around. The Golden Eagles were defeated 6-0 in the first game of the season, and posed a major threat to defeat the Wildcats Friday in the Homecoming tilt.
The Golden Eagles finished with four shots, with three shots on goal. Wayne State posted 28 shots, with 12 on goal.
Lanie Padelford (Jr., D/MF, Mahtomedi, Minn.), Tessa VanOverbeke (Fr., D, Hartford, S.D.), and Jacqueline Calderon (R-Jr., MF, Indio, Calif.) had the shots on goal for U of M Crookston.
Skylar Steuckrath, and Kaelyn Reeves paced Wayne State with two shots on goal.
Minnesota Crookston broke through for the first goal of the game, as Tessa VanOverbeke scored her first career goal, on a rebound of a Padelford shot. The assist is the first of the season for Padelford, who put a great test to Wayne State goalie Hayden Wallace. The goal was scored in the 29th minute of the first half.
The Wildcats got the equalizer in the 34th minute with a goal from Morgan Rhodes, on an Annika Syvrud assist.
Wayne State took the 2-1 lead in the 44th minute with a Reeves goal, off a Syvrud assist.
Neither team found the back of the net in the final 45 minutes, as the Wildcats took the 2-1 win.
Abby Olsen (Sr., GK, Chisago City, Minn.), who is third in the nation for saves per game, finished with 10 saves, and two goals allowed.
Wallace allowed one goal, and finished with two saves.
The game marked Minnesota Crookston's second game where they lost by just a one-goal deficit. The other was against Minot State University September 3.
Minnesota Crookston returns to the pitch Sunday, October 22 at 1 p.m., against Augustana University.
