Marshall, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State swept Minnesota Crookston softball on Sunday afternoon, 11-6 and 5-2.
The Golden Eagles fall to 15-38 (6-22 NSIC) on the season.
Game One
Game one on Sunday afternoon would be a continuation of Saturday afternoon, with both teams tied at three.
Dana Zarn (Jr., UT, Winnipeg, Manitoba) would double in a pair on a double over the Mustangs centerfielder. Zarn would later come into score on a double from another Winnipeg native,
Jenna Parfeniuk (R-So., 1B/P, Winnipeg, Manitoba).
The Mustangs would score three before the game would be stopped and they would follow that up with four runs in the first inning today.
The Golden Eagles would answer in the second.
Shaelyn Grant (So., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) would drive in
Alina Avalos (Jr., IF, Riverside, Calif.) and
Brittney Mengel (Fr., OF, Sullivan, Wis.), cutting the lead to 7-5. Grant would later come into score on a Zarn RBI single.
In the bottom of the fifth, SMSU would get four runs, putting the game out of reach for the 11-6 victory.
The Golden Eagles finished with nine hits, highlighted by two each from Grant, Zarn and
Jordan Peterson (R-Sr., UT, Lakeville, Minn.). Grant finished with two triples in the game, the first time in her career she has done that. Mengel and Grant scored two runs apiece.
Thayda Houser (So., P, Seymour, Iowa) got the start yesterday and picked up the loss, falling to 7-11 on the season.
Evie Stuck (Fr., P/OF, Papillion, Neb.) pitched five innings, giving up four runs on three hits.
Game Two
The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start in game two. Grant would reach on a fielder's choice, scoring Mengel. Grant would later come across to score on a Zarn double.
The 2-0 lead for the Golden Eagles would last until the third inning. Bailey Johnson would homer to right, knotting the game at two.
In the bottom of the fifth, SMSU would score three runs, giving them all the runs they would need for the 5-2 win.
Zarn finished 2-4 at the dish, while Mengel and
Gabriella Blomdahl (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn.) would finish with one hit each. Minnesota Crookston left 11 runners on base as a team.
Annjelica Moreno-Engelbrecht (R-Jr., P/UT, Oceanside, Calif.) earned her second start of the season and went 5.0 innings of work, giving up five runs, just two of which earned on six hits. Minnesota Crookston finished with three errors in the game. The Oceanside native falls to 0-2 on the season.

The Golden Eagles wrap-up the 2022 campaign tomorrow morning for a doubleheader with the University of Sioux Falls. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 11 A.M.
