Minnesota State Uses Strong Pitching to Sweep Golden Eagles in Mankato

Mankato, Minn., -- Minnesota Crookston softball traveled to Mankato for an NSIC doubleheader with Minnesota State.
 
The Mavericks used tough pitching and timely hitting to sweep the Golden Eagles by a score of 7-0 and 6-1.
 
The Golden Eagles fall to 12-27 (3-11 NSIC).
 
Game One
Mackenzie Ward started the opening game for the Mavericks and showed why she is one of the best pitchers in the NSIC, picking up her 20th win, while striking out ten.
 
MSU would score a pair in the second and a run in both the third and fourth innings to stretch their lead to 4-0.
 
In the fifth and sixth innings, the Mavericks would score a run on a single and two on a pair of sacrifice flies to extend their lead to 7-0, which would be the final score.
 
The Golden Eagles would collect two hits on the day. Jordan Peterson (R-Sr., UT, Lakeville, Minn.) and Leah Macias (Sr., OF, West Covina, Calif.) would get the lone two hits for the maroon and gold.
 
Thayda Houser (So., P, Seymour, Iowa) pitched well, but picked up the loss. Houser went 4.2 innings, giving up six runs, just three runs on eight Maverick hits.
 
Game Two
In game two, the Mavericks would score the first three runs, taking a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the third.
 
The Golden Eagles would get on the board with an Alina Avalos (Jr., IF, Riverside, Calif.) RBI double, scoring Alyssa Stillman (Jr., SS/2B, Hortonville, Wis.), who led off the inning with a single.
 
The Golden Eagles would leave Avalos at second and the Mavericks would go on to score the next three runs, earning the sweep and the 6-1 win.
 
Evie Stuck (Fr., P/OF, Papillion, Neb.) went five innings, giving up six runs, all of which were earned on seven hits. Stuck falls to 6-12 on the season.
 
What's Next
The Golden Eagles will stay in Mankato tomorrow to take on the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul in the Maverick All-Sports Dome. First pitch is set for 11:30 AM.
