MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team was swept by Minnesota State University Wednesday, April 13 at Bowyer Field in Mankato, Minn. The Golden Eagles fell 7-2 in the first game, and 11-1 in the second tilt.
Minnesota Crookston fell to 12-21 (4-10 NSIC) with the losses. Minnesota State improved to 22-5 (15-3 NSIC) with the wins. The games were relocated to Mankato, Minn., after originally being scheduled for Crookston, Minn.
Game One
Minnesota State scored five runs in the final two innings to defeat the Golden Eagles 7-2 in the first game.
Cam Kline picked up the win for Minnesota State. He tossed a complete game, going seven innings, and allowing one run, on five hits. Kline struck out eight, and walked one.
Alex Koep (So., LHP, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) suffered the loss, after allowing three runs, on one hit, and two walks, in 0.1 innings in relief.
Jake Osowski (R-So., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.) started the game, and went five innings, allowing just one earned run, on six hits. Osowski struck out two, and walked one.
Brody Sorenson (So., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) was solid in relief, allowing one earned run, on two hits, in 1.2 innings of work.
The Golden Eagles had five hits in the game.
Ben Goelz (R-So., OF, Maple Lake, Minn.) went 3-of-3, with an RBI.
Jack Peppel (Sr., 1B, Olivia, Minn.) finished 2-of-3, with an RBI, and a run scored.
Minnesota State looked to Jackson Hauge, who was 2-of-4, with an RBI, and a run scored. Aidan Byrne went 2-of-3, with a run scored. Jack Friedges was 1-of-3, with an RBI, and two runs scored.
Minnesota Crookston took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second when Peppel singled to right field, driving in
Chad Musser (R-Sr., OF, Plymouth, Minn.). The Mavericks evened the score 1-1 in the top of the third with a Hauge double down the line, scoring Mikey Gottschalk.
Minnesota State tilted the score in their favor in the top of the fourth with a solo home run from Ross Indlecoffer to make it 2-1.
The Golden Eagles knotted up the game 2-2 in the fifth with a Goelz single to plate Peppel. The Mavericks got the run back in the top of the sixth when
Isaac Roers (Fr., RHP, Stacy, Minn.) walked Ryan Wickman with the bases loaded, driving in Byrne. Roers then walked Nick Altermatt, plating Friedges, as the Mavericks took the 4-2 advantage. Minnesota State added one more run in the frame with a Gottschalk sacrifice fly, scoring Mikey Fredrickson.
Brody Sorenson was able to pitch Minnesota Crookston out of any further trouble, keeping the score at 5-2.
Minnesota State pushed their lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh with a Friedges double to right center, scoring Hauge. The Mavericks widened the gap to 7-2 as Fredrickson reached on an error,
allowing Friedges to come around and score. Sorenson was able to get out of the stanza, but not without Minnesota State adding run support.
The Golden Eagles were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh, as they fell 7-2.
Game Two
In the second game of the doubleheader, Minnesota State scored five runs in the fourth inning to catapult an 11-1 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Conner Richardson (R-Jr., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) got the start for the Golden Eagles, going five innings and allowing four earned runs, on nine hits. Richardson struck out three and had no walks.
Jakob Wiirre (Jr., RHP, Mims, Fla.) and
Jackson Schneider (R-Jr., RHP, Forest Lake, Minn.) each pitched scoreless innings in relief.
Nathan Culley got the start for the Mavericks, tossing five innings in the win. Culley struck out six, and walked three.
The Golden Eagles scattered five hits in the game. Thoma went 2-of-4 for the game.
Brad Morris (R-Sr., OF, Auckland, New Zealand) was 2-of-3, with an RBI. Goelz finished 1-of-3, with a run scored.
Minnesota State was lifted by Gottschalk, who went 3-of-5, with three RBIs, and a run scored. Kline finished 2-of-4, with two runs scored. Hauge was 2-of-5, with a run scored. Fredrickson was 2-of-3, with an RBI, and a run scored.
Minnesota Crookston jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first when Morris singled to right center, driving in Goelz.
The Mavericks knotted the score up 1-1 in the second with an Indlecoffer single, plating Cline.
Minnesota State had a scoring barrage in the fourth with five runs. The Mavericks got on the scoreboard first when Byrne singled, scoring Gottschalk. Later in the inning, Kline came in on a throwing error. The Mavericks extended their lead to 4-1 when Friedges reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Hauge. A Fredrickson single plated Byrne to give Minnesota State a 5-1 lead. Minnesota State capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Wickman, bringing in Indlecoffer.
In the sixth inning, the Mavericks added two runs to their lead to push the advantage to 8-1.
Gottschalk added a two RBI double in the eighth, bringing in Hunter Ranweiler, and Nathan Berg to make it 10-1.
Minnesota State put a stamp on their win with a solo home run from Friedges.
The Golden Eagles are slated to play Bemidji State University Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16 in Crookston, Minn. The games will be contingent on field conditions and forecasted weather. Stay tuned to
