Golden Eagle Baseball Picks up Sweep over Bulldogs

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a Thursday sweep over the University of Minnesota Duluth with a 5-2 win, and a 10-5 victory. The Golden Eagles picked up their first sweep over the Bulldogs since May 4 and 5, 2018. The sweep snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Minnesota Crookston improved to 14-21 (6-10 NSIC). The Golden Eagles are now 12th in the NSIC standings. Minnesota Duluth fell to 14-19 (8-12 NSIC) with the pair of losses. The games were played at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn.

Game One
The Golden Eagles were lifted by three home runs in a 5-2 victory over the Bulldogs in the first game of a doubleheader. In addition, Jake Dykhoff (R-Jr., RHP, Wadena, Minn.) had another stand-out performance on the mound, and was supported by the Golden Eagle bats. Dykhoff improved to 6-3, as he allowed just two runs, on 10 hits. Dykhoff struck out seven and walked just three. Jakob Wiirre (Jr., RHP, Mims, Fla.) came on and picked up his first save, tossing 0.2 innings, and striking out one.

Aaron Wukmir picked up the loss for UMD. He went four innings, allowing four earned runs, on six hits. He struck out one, and walked one.

The Golden Eagles had eight hits in the game. Chad Musser (R-Sr., OF, Plymouth, Minn.) paced Minnesota Crookston, going 2-of-2, with an RBI, and two runs scored. Musser hit his second home run of the season. Mitch Goodwin (R-So., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) was 1-of-3, with two RBIs, and a run scored, including a two-run home run. Jake Hjelle (R-So., 3B/OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.) finished 1-of-3, with an RBI, and a run scored, including his ninth home run of the season. Ben Bryant (R-Sr., 2B/SS, Fargo, N.D.) finished 1-of-3, with a run scored.

Minnesota Duluth finished with 10 hits. Tim Pokornowski was 2-of-4, with an RBI, and a run scored. Brodie Paulson finished 2-of-3, with an RBI. Tosten Mann was 2-of-3, with a run scored.

Hjelle opened up the scoring with a solo shot in the top of the first to give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 advantage.

The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the second when Goodwin smashed a ball for a two-run home run, driving in Musser. Also in the second, Brad Morris (R-Sr., OF, Auckland, New Zealand) singled, and Bryant came in to score on an error in center field.

UMD trimmed the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the second when Paulson doubled down the line, scoring Pokoronowski.

Minnesota Crookston added a run in the fourth with a Musser solo home run, making it 5-1.

The Bulldogs got a run back in the seventh with a Pokornowski single, scoring Mann to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 5-2. However, Wiirre shut Minnesota Duluth down the rest of the way as Minnesota Crookston won 5-2.
Dykhoff has been great on the mound for the Golden Eagles this season. He is 6-3 with a 1.71 ERA, with 74 strikeouts, and just 13 walks. He has given up no more than three runs in a start this season.

Game Two
The Golden Eagles picked up the sweep with a 10-5 victory over the Bulldogs. Minnesota Crookston's bats came on fire with 18 hits. UMN Crookston was lifted by home runs from Thoma and Goodwin.

Jake Osowski (R-So., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.) moved to 4-0 on the season. He threw six innings, allowing just four runs, on 11 hits. Osowski struck out eight, and didn't walk anyone. Isaac Roers (Fr., RHP, Stacy, Minn.) picked up his second save of the season. Roers allowed two hits, and struck out one.

Eric Hinnenkamp suffered the loss for Minnesota Duluth after allowing five runs, on six hits, in one inning. Alex Sturnieks gave up four runs, on eight hits, in four innings.

The Golden Eagles were guided by Matt Nunn (Jr., C, Edina, Minn.), who went 3-of-4, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Hjelle finished 3-of-5, with an RBI, and a run scored. Morris went 3-of-5, with an RBI, and a run scored. Ben Thoma (R-Sr., C/3B, Clearbrook, Minn.) went 2-of-5, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Goodwin finished 2-of-4, with two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Minnesota Crookston jumped out early as they scored three runs in the top of the first. Hjelle opened up the scoring with a single to left field, scoring Morris. In the next at-bat. Thoma sent his team-leading 11th home run over the fence, plating Hjelle.

The Bulldogs got two runs back in the bottom of the first when Mann sent one out of the ballpark, scoring himself, and Brandt Kolpack.

Minnesota Crookston pushed their lead to 4-2 with a solo shot from Goodwin in the top of the second. Later in the stanza, with the bases loaded Matt Nunn (Jr., C, Edina, Minn.) singled to center field, scoring Jack Peppel (Sr., 1B, Olivia, Minn.) to make it 5-2 Golden Eagles.

In the third frame, Goodwin singled in Ben Goelz (R-So., OF, Maple Lake, Minn.) to extend the advantage to 6-2.

Minnesota Duluth got a run back in the fourth when Alex Watermann singled through the left side, driving in Pokornowski.

The Golden Eagles added three runs in the fifth inning. Bryant opened up the scoring with a single, scoring Musser. Morris then singled up the middle, plating Goodwin to extend the advantage to 8-3. Nunn's double to left center scored Bryant to widen the gap to 9-3.

UMD cut the deficit to 9-5 when Paulson doubled in Mann, and Pokornowski.

The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 10-5 in the eighth when Goelz singled, scoring Nunn.

Minnesota Crookston will take on Southwest Minnesota State University Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24 in Marshall, Minn.
