GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team continued to show improvement, as they fell 5-2 to University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday, February 5 at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D. The Golden Eagles picked up their second-straight match with at least one singles win, and picked up their first doubles victory since March 5, 2018.

The Golden Eagles opened the season with a 0-2 mark, but it isn't indicative of improvement shown by the team. Minnesota Duluth moved to 2-0 with Saturday's victory.

UMN Crookston was guided by the play of Madeleine Schneider (So., Gartringen, Germany), who moved to 2-0 at No. 1 singles for the Golden Eagles. With the victory, Schneider becomes the winningest player at No. 1 singles since Catherine Brown in 2016. Schneider took down Shay Callaway, 6-3, 7-5, with Saturday's victory. At the No. 3 doubles slot, Michelle Swyter (Jr., Perham, Minn.) and Kaydance Hinn (Fr., Coon Rapid, Minn.) upended Olivia Honsey and Allison Jonhdahl, 6-2. The victory is the first doubles win since Whitney Erickson and Reanne Erickson picked up a win over University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 2018. At No. 4 singles, Tasha Achermann (So., Motley, Minn.) picked up her first career win after battling back down 1-0, to upend Amanda Hanowski, 6-3, 6-2 in the final two sets.

At No. 1 doubles, Schneider and Sarah Velasquez (So., Chino, Calif.) took three games, but fell 6-3 to Callaway and Isabel Resler. At the No. 2 doubles slot, Tasha Achermann (So., Motley, Minn.) and Samantha Gutierrez (So., Riverside, Calif.) fell 6-2 to Abby Johnson and Hanowski.

At the No. 2 singles slot, Swyter was competitive, but fell 6-3, 6-2 to Resler. At the No. 3 spot, Velasquez was also competitive, but was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Johnson. At the No. 5 spot, Gutierrez played well, but was upended 6-3, 6-2 by Gutierrez. At the No. 6 slot, Hinn played a great first set, defeating Johndal, 6-3. However, the UMD player was able to edge Hinn in the final two sets 6-4, 6-0.

Minnesota Crookston returns to the court Saturday, February 12 against Minnesota State University, Mankato in Owatonna, Minn.
