CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team will host St. Cloud State University Friday, February 4 at 5 p.m., and the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday, February 5 at 4 p.m. The matches will be the first two of the season for the Golden Eagle women's tennis team.
Minnesota Crookston is in their first year back under the leadership of Head Coach
Josh Lunak, who was on the coach from 2007-13. Lunak led the Golden Eagles to a 3-12 mark his last season. Minnesota Crookston is currently searching for their first win since 2015. They are sitting in a solid spot moving forward with one of the best rosters the team has had in recent seasons. The Golden Eagles are guided by Drury University transfer
Madeleine Schneider (So., Gartringen, Germany). Schneider went 2-1 as a freshman in singles for a very strong Drury team. UMN Crookston welcomes back
Tasha Achermann (So., Motley, Minn.) and
Michelle Swyter (Jr., Perham, Minn.), who played as the team's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players respectively, and also teamed up as the squad's top doubles squad. The Golden Eagles also return
Ashley Chomyn (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba), who played No. 3 singles last season. In addition, UMN Crookston has added
Samantha Gutierrez (So., Riverside, Calif.),
Sarah Velasquez (So., Chino, Calif.), and
Kaydance Hinn (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) to the roster. Gutierrez was a strong doubles player at Patriot H.S., while Velasquez was a Second Team All-Mt. Baldy League pick for softball, and was a two-time Most Valuable Player winner for the tennis team.
Minnesota Duluth went 5-7 during the 2021 season, while St. Cloud State posted a 5-9 record. The Huskies were guided by Sam Fitzpatrick at No. 2 singles, and Shanna Kinny, who played No. 3 and No. 4 singles last season. UMD returns Mallory Lithun at No. 3 singles and Shay Callaway at No. 4 singles.
