BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Upper Iowa University Sunday, February 20 at Gillett Wellness Center in Bemidji, Minn. The Golden Eagles were guided by a win at No. 6 singles by
Ashley Chomyn (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba), her second of the season for UMN Crookston.
Minnesota Crookston dropped to 0-7 with the loss, while Upper Iowa improved to 5-4 with the victory.
Chomyn led the way with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Elaina Wall. At No. 1 singles,
Madeleine Schneider (So., Gartringen, Germany) was competitive, but fell 6-2, 6-4 to Charalampia Grammatikaki. At the No. 2 slot,
Michelle Swyter (Jr., Perham, Minn.) fell 6-2, 6-1 to Jessa Michieli. At the No. 3 spot,
Sarah Velasquez (So., Chino, Calif.) was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Varvara Ogorodnikova. At the No. 4 singles slot,
Tasha Achermann (So., Staples, Minn.) won three games in the first, and two in the second, but fell 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 5 slot,
Samantha Gutierrez (So., Riverside, Calif.) was upended 6-3, 6-1 by Padmasree Murugan.
In doubles, the No. 3 pairing of Achermann and Hinn played very well, but were upended 7-6 by Murugan and Wall. At the No. 1 spot, Schneider and Velasquez were defeated 6-2 by Michieli and Grammatikaki. The No. 2 slot, Gutierrez and Swyter fell 6-0 to Ogorodnikova and Lina Ziani.
Minnesota Crookston will return to the tennis court March 14 against Stevenson University in Orlando, Fla.
