Minnesota Crookston Tennis Falls to Bemidji State and Winona State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Winona State University and 6-1 to Bemidji State University Saturday, February 19 at Gillett Willness Center in Bemidji, Minn. The Golden Eagles were guided by Ashley Chomyn (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba), who picked up a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against Taylor Offerdahl. The victory is the first for Chomyn, and the fifth singles win of the year for the Golden Eagles, who have continued to improve.

Minnesota Crookston dropped to 0-6 with the losses. Winona State moved to 4-2 with the win, while Bemidji State improved to 5-4 with the victory.

Against Winona State in doubles, Madeleine Schneider (So., Gartringen, Germany) and Sarah Velasquez (So., Chino, Calif.) fell 6-2 to Rachel Kelly and Marina Niehoff. At the No. 2 slot, Tasha Achermann (So., Staples, Minn.) and Samantha Gutierrez (So., Riverside, Calif.) were defeated 6-0 by Sara Anderson and Beth Murman. At the No. 3 spot, Michelle Swyter (Jr., Perham, Minn.) and Kaydance Hinn (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) fell 6-3 to Brooke Holloway and Chloe Pecarich.

In singles, Schneider went three sets with Kelly, but ultimately was defeated 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. At the No. 2 slot, Swyter was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Murman. At No. 3 singles, Velasquez had a strong third set against Niehoff, taking four games, 6-4, but she fell 6-0 in the final set. At the No. 4 spot, Achermann fell to Anderson, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, Gutierrez took three games in the first set and two in the second, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 6 singles, Hinn had a strong second set taking five games from Mikayla Hanson. She was upended 6-1, 7-5.

In the Bemidji State match, Chomyn led the way with the 7-6, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 singles slot. At No. 1 singles, Schneider tested Sophie Groen, but was defeated 6-2, 6-4, but continues to have one of the best starts in recent history for the Golden Eagle tennis program at No. 1 singles. At the No. 2 slot, Swyter was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Shaelyn Johnson. At the No. 3 singles spot, Velasquez was upended 6-1, 6-1 by Nicoleta Anestiadi. At No. 4 singles, Achermann was very competitive, taking the second set 6-3, and narrowly losing the decisive set, 10-7. At the No. 5 slot, Gutierrez fell 6-1, 6-1 to Lily Jones.

In doubles, Schneider and Velasquez fell at the No. 1 spot 6-2 to Groen and Johnson. At the No. 2 slot, Swyter and Gutierrez were defeated 6-0 by Anestiadi and Laney Rutkowski. At the No. 3 slot, Achermann and Hinn fell 6-1 to Isabela Nelson and Lexi Leitner.

The Golden Eagles will face Upper Iowa University Sunday, February 20 at 9:30 a.m.
