Golden Eagles Second Half Rally Falls Short at No. 7/16 St. Cloud State

St. Cloud, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston women's basketball traveled to nationally ranked St. Cloud State for their final road trip of the season.
 
The No. 7/16 Huskies would hold off a furious second half Golden Eagle rally and defeat the maroon and gold, 67-59.
 
The Golden Eagles would get off to a good start, scoring on their first possession of the game on a Mary Burke (Sr., F, Virginia, Minn.) right wing three.
 
Brehna Evans of St. Cloud State would answer with a three of her own, but Emma Carpenter (Jr., G, Eagan, Minn.) would finish on a beautiful reverse layup to give the Golden Eagles a 5-3 lead.
 
Kylie Post (Sr., G, Corcoran, Minn.) would score the final Golden Eagle points of the quarter on a left-handed layup to give the Golden Eagles a 7-5 lead.
 
The Huskies would finish the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 13-7 lead after the first ten minutes.
 
The Husky run extend to 12-0 into the second quarter, but Abigail Leach (Jr., G/F, Wyoming, Minn.) would bury a corner three to end the run.
 
The Golden Eagles would cut the SCSU lead to just six on back-to-back layups from Haylee Wheeler (So., F, Lakeville, Minn.).
 
After another Burke three cutting the SCSU lead to 24-17, the Huskies would finish the half on an 8-3 run to go into the locker room up by 12, at 32-20.
 
The Golden Eagles were led by Burke and Post, who finished the half with six and five points, respectively. The Golden Eagles had 12 first quarter turnovers, which resulted in 18 Husky points.
 
The third quarter would see the Golden Eagles start to chip into the Huskies lead. SCSU would get their lead to 36-24, but Post, Burke and Alex Page (Fr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) would be instrumental in cutting the lead to just three at 38-35.
 
SCSU would once again extend their lead to seven, but a pair of three's from Burke and Leach would cut the lead to four. SCSU would head into the final quarter with a 49-41 lead. The Golden Eagles would shoot 53.3 percent from the field. Burke would finish with nine third quarter points.
 
Early in the fourth, Carpenter would bury a left wing three, making it 51-46 in favor of the Huskies. SCSU would extend their lead to 10, but a Page free throw and a Carpenter layup would cut the lead back down to seven.
 
Minnesota Crookston would cut the Huskies lead to five a pair of times, but a Tori Wortz three with just over two minutes remaining in the game would help the Huskies put the game away down the stretch.
 
In the game, the Golden Eagles were led by a pair of seniors in Post and Burke, who finished with 16 and 15, respectively. Carpenter added nine, while Leach tallied six in the game.
 
The Golden Eagles shot 42.1 percent from the field in the game.
 
Minnesota Crookston will close out their season on Saturday afternoon against No. 17 Minnesota Duluth at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles will also honor four players: Burke, Post, Kylea Praska (Sr., G, Thief River Falls, Minn.) and Mattea Vetsch (R-So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.).
