OWATONNA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team picked up a singles and doubles victory Saturday, February 12, but fell 6-1 to Southwest Minnesota State University at West Hills Tennis & Fitness in Owatonna, Minn.
The Golden Eagles open the season with a 0-3 mark, but they have shown great growth so far this season under Head Coach
Josh Lunak. Southwest Minnesota State improved to 8-1 with the victory.
Minnesota Crookston obtained a win at No. 1 singles from
Madeleine Schneider (So., Gartringen, Germany). Schneider has started the season with a 3-0 mark, already boasting the best singles record for the Golden Eagles at the No. 1 slot since Catherine Brown in 2016. At No. 3 doubles,
Kaydance Hinn (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and
Michelle Swyter (Jr., Perham, Minn.) picked up their second singles win. Schneider upended Courtenay Leonard, 6-4, 6-1. Swyter and Hinn defeated Faith Madikwe and Skylar Mendro, 6-4.
At the No. 1 doubles slot, Schneider and
Sarah Velasquez (So., Chino, Calif.) fell 6-0 to Maja Louisa Harck and Joana Reis Indio. At the No. 2 spot,
Tasha Achermann (So., Staples, Minn.) and
Samantha Gutierrez (So., Riverside, Calif.) fell 6-0 to Cora Delich and Roz Oye.
At the No. 2 singles slot, Swyter fell to Indio, 6-3, 6-1. At the No. 3 spot, Velasquez was defeated by Harck, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 4 spot, Achermann was upended by Delich, 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 5 slot, Gutierrez was defeated by Daniela Poulakidas, 6-3. 6-2. At the No. 6 spot, Hinn was defeated by Abbey Agra, 6-4, 6-1.
Minnesota Crookston will face Minnesota State University-Mankato in Owatonna, Minn. Sunday, February 13 at 1:30 p.m.
