Huskies Use Surge Late in First Half to Upend Minnesota Crookston in NSIC Play


Crookston, Minn. – St. Cloud State used a 10-1 run to finish the first half and a 6-0 run to start the second half to knock off the Golden Eagles, 81-67, in NSIC Men's Basketball action on Saturday.
 
Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-8 (0-3 NSIC) on the season.
 
It would be a great start to the game for the Golden Eagles. Xzavier Jones (Jr., G, Milwaukee, Wis.) would rattle home a three to put the Golden Eagles up early, 3-0.
 
SCSU would take a 13-7 lead, but the Golden Eagles would answer early in the first half. Ron Kirk, Jr., (So., G, Milwaukee, Wis.) would finish a tough drive and Rambo Badyal (Sr., G, Kelowna, British Columbia) would bury a three and then make a technical free throw on a flopping technical on the Huskies.
 
Trailing 16-13, the Golden Eagles would go on an 8-0 run, finished by a Tyrese Shines (Jr., G, La Grange, Ill.) long two-point make.
 
Leading 21-20, De'Antray Hughes (Jr., F, New Orleans, La.) would throw home a thunderous slam, putting the Huskies' Matthew Willert on a poster.
 
SCSU would close out the half on a 10-1 run, heading into the break up by nine, 40-31.
 
The Huskies would come out firing in the second half, eventually extending their lead to 53-36.
 
The maroon and gold would try to chip away. The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to just 10, following a Kirk, Jr., three-point make.
 
The Golden Eagles wouldn't be able to get within ten, as the Huskies would make big plays for the 81-67 victory.
 
Jones finished with 15 points and five rebounds, while Blaize Sagna (So., G, London, England) added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Pedro Rossi (So., C, Bahia Blanca, Argentina) scored a career-high 11 points, while Badyal scored 11 points, his third straight game in double-figures.
 
The Golden Eagles outshot the Huskies, 44 percent to 38 percent, but the Huskies shot 23 free throws, compared to just eight for the Golden Eagles.
 
What's Next
The Golden Eagles head to Aberdeen, as they play Northern State on Friday night at 7:30 P.M., in Wachs Arena.
