CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team fell 3-0 Sunday, October 9 to Winona State University to cap off Homecoming festivities for the week. Winona State stepped on the gas early with a goal in the seventh minute and did not look back.
Minnesota Crookston fell to 2-11-0 (1-9-0 NSIC) with Sunday's loss. Winona State improves to 6-4-3 (4-3-3 NSIC) with the victory.
The Warriors controlled pace on the offensive end throughout the contest. Winona State finished with 36 shots, 16 on goal. Minnesota Crookston had two shots, one on goal. The Golden Eagles picked up shots from
Julia Finch (Fr., D, Woodbury, Minn.) and
Sarah Burgum (Fr., F, Mandan, N.D.).
Madelynn Drasher led Winona State with a goal, and an assist. Jaida Wiege and Riley Harmon also added goals. Ellie Wardell chipped in an assist. Abigail Williams paced the team with four shots.
Winona State struck first in the seventh minute when Wiege put back her own miss to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors pushed the advantage to 2-0 when Drasher scored off a Sarah Starting assist.
Minnesota Crookston had offensive opportunities in the second half, but Winona State was able to put away the game with a goal from Riley Harmon off assists from Drasher and Wardell in the 56
th minute.
Chloe Swanson started the game in goal for Winona State and played 31:31, allowing no goals and notching no saves. Alyson Jumper came in the first half and started the second half, logging 35:09 minute, with a save. Yanel Ortiz finished out the game, playing 23:30.
Kathryn Brainerd (Sr., GK, Corcoran, Minn.) played a full 90 minutes for the Golden Eagles, she allowed three goals, and had 13 saves.
Minnesota Crookston has an important road weekend as they head to University of Sioux Falls Friday, October 14 and Southwest Minnesota State University Sunday, October 16.
