Minot, N.D. – Minot State used dominant third and fourth sets to pick up their first win of 2022 over Minnesota Crookston in four sets (17-25, 25-19, 13-25, 15-25).
The Golden Eagles fall to 4-22 (3-15 NSIC), while the Beavers improve to 1-24 (1-17 NSIC).
First Set
Minot State would jump out to a quick start, taking a 7-3 lead, but
Audrey Cariveau (Fr., OH, Kevil, Kent.) would collect a kill to help the maroon and gold back into the set.
A bad set would help the Golden Eagles tie the set and nine. They would also tie the set at 11 and 12.
Another Cariveau kill would make it 18-16, but the Beavers would score five straight, pulling away for the 25-17 win.
Second Set
In the second set, the Golden Eagles would flip the script and get off to a quick start, taking a 7-2 lead, helped by a
Kora Norland (So., S, Fosston, Minn.) service ace.
Back-to-back kills from
Mara Weisensel (Jr., MB, New Ulm, Minn.) and Cariveau would give the Golden Eagles an 11-5 lead.
Minot State would tie things up at 14, but the Golden Eagles would go on three separate 2-0 runs and a 3-0 run, propelling Minnesota Crookston to a six point win in set two.
Third Set
The third set would swing back and forth early on.
Charlee Krieg (Jr., OH, Cavalier, N.D.) would collect a kill, cutting the deficit to 13-12, but the Beavers would score seven in a row for a 20-12 lead.
The Golden Eagles would try to claw their way back into the set, but the Beavers would take control of the match with a 25-13 set three win.
Fourth Set
Minot State would control the early portion of the fourth set, but with their backs against the wall, the Golden Eagles would fight back.
Krieg would collect two kills,
Bailey Schaefer (So., OH, Brandon, Minn.) would collect a kill and
Layne Whaley (So., DS, Ashland, Neb.) would pick up a service ace as part of a 4-0 run to make it 10-8 in favor of the Beavers.
The Golden Eagles would eventually come back and tie the set up two separate occasions and 14 and 15 apiece, but the Beavers would score the final 10 points of the set for their first win of the season.
Individual Stats
Cariveau finished with 14 kills on 60 total attacks, while Weisensel finished with nine kills.
Norland finished with 21 assists and nine digs in the match. The Golden Eagles had four players with ten or more digs, led by the 17 from Whaley.

The Golden Eagles will wrap-up 2022 next weekend for senior weekend. The Golden Eagles will host Northern State on Friday at 5 P.M.
