Crookston, Minn. – After defeating the Golden Eagles in four sets earlier this season in Aberdeen, the Wolves of Northern State made sure that the same thing didn't happen on Friday night, sweeping the Golden Eagles in straight sets (18-25, 11-25, 17-25).
The Golden Eagles fall to 4-23 (3-16 NSIC), while NSU improves to 17-10 (10-7 NSIC).
Set One
An early indication of how the match would go was the start for the Wolves. NSU would score the first five points before a
Charlee Krieg (Jr., OH, Cavalier, N.D.) kill.
NSU would eventually stretch their lead to 17-8, but back-to-back kills from Krieg would cut the Wolves lead to seven.
Minnesota Crookston would cut the lead to just five, capped off by a kill and a service ace from
Bailey Schaefer (So., OH, Brandon, Minn.).
The Wolves would pull away for the seven point set one victory.
Set Two
It would be another set two quick start for the Wolves, who would lead 5-0 again, before an attack error.
NSU would stretch their lead to 13-4, but kills from
Audrey Cariveau (Fr., OH, Kevil, Kent.) and
Grace Arndorfer (So., MH, Lino Lakes, Minn.) would cut it to 13-7.
It would be 16-11, but a huge 9-0 run would end the set, as the Wolves would take control of the match with the 25-11 win.
Set Three
It wouldn't quite be the same fast start for the Wolves as the previous two sets, but the Wolves would still lead 6-2 early on.
The Wolves would lead 9-5, but two straight points by the Golden Eagles would make it a 9-7 game.
The Wolves would take a timeout after a surge by the maroon and gold leading 15-13. The timeout would seem to work, as Northern State would go on an 8-0 run to take control of the set.
That run would be enough, as a late surge by the Golden Eagles was too little, too late.
Individual Stats
Krieg led the way with eight kills on a team-high 24 attacks, while Schaefer finished with six kills on 13 total attacks.
Mara Weisensel (Jr., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) had five kills on 16 total attacks.
