UMary Uses Big Runs to Defeat Golden Eagles in Four Sets

Bismarck, N.D. – Minnesota Crookston was looking to avenge an earlier season loss to the University of Mary on Friday night for a match with the Marauders. The Marauders made sure that didn't happen, picking up the four-set win (20-25, 25-20, 17-25, 11-25).

The Golden Eagles fall to 4-21 (3-15 NSIC), while the Marauders move ahead in the NSIC, improving to 5-20 (4-14 NSIC).

Set One
The first set would start back-and-forth. The Golden Eagles would take an early 8-6 lead, highlighted by a Bailey Schaefer (So., OH, Brandon, Minn.) kill.

UMary would then lead 10-8, before a service error would halt the Marauder run.

A service ace from Audrey Cariveau (Fr., OH, Kevil, Kent.) and a kill from Schaefer would knot things up at 15.

UMary would score the next two, but Krieg would collect one of her team-high 14 kills to tie things up at 17.

From that point, the Marauders would score the next five, enough for the first set victory at 25-20.

Set Two
The Golden Eagles would start fast in an important set two, scoring the first three points of the middle set.

However, UMary would answer with three straight points of their own to tie things up at three early in the set.

Back-to-back kills from Krieg and a kill from Grace Arndorfer (So., MB, Lino Lakes, Minn) would give the maroon and gold a 7-5 lead.

A Krieg kill and a Mara Weisensel (Jr., MB, New Ulm, Minn.) kill would give the Golden Eagles control of the set, as the Golden Eagles would win the second set the same way the Marauders won the first set, 25-20.

Set Three
Minnesota Crookston would take early control of the third set, taking a 5-1 lead, but the Marauders would chip away.

UMary would eventually tie things up at 11 and then go on a 7-0 run, taking an 18-11 lead.

The Golden Eagles would score the next two, capped off by a Cariveau kill, but the Marauders would pull away for the eight point win in the set.

Set Four
Set four would be all Marauders.

Minnesota Crookston would take a brief 5-4 lead on a Krieg kill, but UMary would go on a massive run, taking a 13-6 lead.

The Marauders would not let the Golden Eagles get back into the set, winning the deciding set, 25-11 and the match, three sets to one.

Individual Stats
Krieg led the way with 14 kills on 39 attacks, while Cariveau finished with another eight kill performance. Weisensel had seven kills in the match.

Natalie Koke (R-Sr., S, Caledonia, Wis.) finished with another double-double, collecting 32 assists and 11 digs.
