Crookston, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston fought hard in all three sets, but No. 7 St. Cloud State made plays when they needed them, picking up a sweep of the Golden Eagles (23-25, 14-25, 18-25).
The Golden Eagles fall to 3-20 (2-13 NSIC), while SCSU improves to 19-4 (11-4 NSIC).
Set One
The first set would be back-and-forth as there would be seven ties within the first 20 points. Two straight kills from
Audrey Cariveau (Fr., OH, Kevil, Kent.) would tie the set up at 10.
SCSU would take a brief 18-16 lead, but an attacking errors from the Huskies would get the Golden Eagles back within one.
A
Bailey Schaefer (So., OH, Brandon, Minn.) kill would cap off a 5-0 run, giving the maroon and gold their largest lead of the set at 22-19, forcing a timeout.
The timeout by the Huskies seemed to pay dividends, as SCSU would take a 23-22 lead. Schaefer collected another kill knotting things up at 23, but the Huskies would score the final two for the first set win.
Set Two
A pair of service aces by Schaefer and a
Mara Weisensel (Jr., MB, New Ulm, Minn.) kill would put the Golden Eagles up 3-1 early on in the set.
Emma Berran would go on a run, giving the Huskies a 10-3 lead before a service error.
The Golden Eagles would try and chip away at the lead, but the Huskies would prove to be too much, winning the set, 25-14.
Set Three
The Golden Eagles would take an early lead on a pair of kills from Cariveau and a kill from
Grace Arndorfer (So., MB, Lino Lakes, Minn.).
A
Charlee Krieg (Jr., OH, Cavalier, N.D.) kill would give the Golden Eagles a 7-4 lead.
Both teams would continue to go back and forth in the set before the Huskies would go on a 6-0 run for a 14-9 lead.
The Golden Eagles would claw their way back into the set, helped by a trio of aces from Cariveau and
Natalie Koke (R-Sr., S, Caledonia, Wis.).
Leading 16-15, the Huskies would pull away, scoring nine of the next 12 points for the 15-18 victory and the sweep over the Golden Eagles.
Individual Stats
Cariveau led the way with 10 kills on 28 total attacks, while Schaefer hit .316 in the match with nine kills on 19 total attacks. Koke collected 19 assists in the match.
