CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's hockey team wrapped up their inaugural season back on the ice on Saturday with a 6-0 win over the 10
th-ranked University of Jamestown Jimmies. Jumping out to a 3-0 lead within eight minutes left in the first period, the Golden Eagles were the better team from the drop of the puck through the final buzzer and played arguably their best game of the season to wrap up the programs first season back at UMN Crookston. The Golden Eagles finish the season at 6-7 while Jamestown moves to 11-16-2 with two more series left on the year.
The Golden Eagles were dominant on the offensive side on Saturday. They put up 72 shots to Jamestown's 39 and had 51 shots on goal while the Jimmies only had 19. The Golden Eagles were 2-of-7 on power plays and Jamestown was 0-of-6. The Jimmies had five penalties for 16 minutes while the Golden Eagles had six penalties for 15 minutes.
The Golden Eagles scored early in the game as
Cam Olstad (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) made the first goal off of an assist by both
Brandon Boetcher (So., F, Crookston, Minn.) and
Gunner Ferrier (Fr., D, Baudette, Minn.) just under two minutes into the first period. Almost exactly two minutes later Boetcher was able to get his own, unassisted, goal. Later in that period,
Josh Nelson (Fr., D, East Grand Forks, Minn.) got a goal to go in off of a
Tristan Morneault (Fr., F, Dieppe, New Brunswick) assist.
The second period saw the Golden Eagles score two power play goals. The first one coming from Boetcher about ten minutes into the period. It was assisted on by
Casey Kallock (Jr., D, East Grand Forks, Minn.) and
Tyler Zahradka (Fr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.). The second came courtesy of
Zach Larson (Fr. F, Grand Forks, N.D.) and was assisted on by Boetcher.
The third period saw only one goal and it was from Olstad; it was assisted on by Zahradka.
Boetcher was the leader for the Golden Eagles tonight. He had two goals, two assists, and led the team in both points (4) and plus/minus (+3). Olstad was another big contributor for the Golden Eagles Saturday, scoring two goals and getting a game leading 10 shots on goal. He finished with two total points. Zahradka was the only other Golden Eagle above one point. He had two thanks to his two assists during the game.
Jake Sumner (Fr. G, Alta Loma, Calif.) had arguably the best day for the Golden Eagles. He had 12 blocks and 19 saves. Saturday was the first time in Sumner's short career he has gotten a shut out for an entire game. He seemed to know how to defend every attempt and it gave the offense the confidence it needed to keep letting shots fly.
This concludes the inaugural season for the new University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team as they post a record of (6-7), finishing on a four-game win streak. UMN Crookston is not eligible for playoffs in their first season of ACHA Division II. They look poised to build off a strong first season as they enter their second year as a program in 2021-22. UMN Crookston is currently ranked No. 20 in the nation and after a sweep of Jamestown this weekend, they look poised to remain in the Top 20 in the rankings set to be released next week.
