Two Power Play Goals not enough as No. 1 Marauders Skate past Minnesota Crookston

2/6/2021 7:35:00 PM

Crookston, Minn.—It was the biggest test this season for the Golden Eagle men's hockey team, who hosted the Marauders of the University of Mary. The Marauders came into this weekend with just one loss on the season and ranked No. 1 in ACHA Division II.

UMary used two goals in both the second and third periods to hand the Golden Eagles their third straight loss, 5-2.

With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 2-4-0, while the Marauders improve to 22-1-2.
First Period
The first period would be a smooth period, with not very many whistles.

A lot of the first period was spent in the Golden Eagles zone, facing a lot of pressures from the Marauders.

The Golden Eagles would get a penalty at 15:29 of the first period, but a Casey Kallock (Jr., D, East Grand Forks, Minn.) tripping penalty would negate the man advantage for Minnesota Crookston.

At even strength, the Marauders would get on the board first with a goal from Alex Flicek at 17:06 of the first period.

The Golden Eagles would get two grade A chances at the closing second of the first period, but Kyle Hayden would make two giant saves to keep the lead at 1-0.
Second Period
Much like the first 20 minutes of play, the start of the period would be played in the Golden Eagles zone.

Flicek would get his second goal of the night on an assist from Zach Garrett at 8:14 of the second period to give UMary a 2-0 lead.

Four minutes later, Andrew Huber would give the Marauders a 3-0 lead after finding the back of the net on a scrum in front of Golden Eagle goaltender Jake Sumner (Fr., G, Alta Loma, Calif.).
Third Period
Trailing by three heading into the final stanza of play, the Golden Eagles would cut the Marauders lead to 3-1. Josh Nelson (Fr., D, East Grand Forks, Minn.) would take a pass on the tape from Cam Olstad to finally get the puck past Hayden. That goal was the first of two power play goals for the Golden Eagles, which came just six seconds into the man advantage.

The special teams were good to the Marauders in the third period, scoring two goals, one on the shorthanded variety and one on the man advantage to make it 5-1.

The Golden Eagles would score at 15:32 of the third period, once again on the man advantage, as Wisconsin-Stout transfer Cam Olstad (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) found the back of the net after a beautiful feed out front from Casey Kallock. Nelson picked up the secondary assist, his second point of the night.
Key Stats
The Golden Eagles were led by Kallock, Olstad and Nelson, who each had two points on the night.

Sumner was excellent in goal, making 45 saves on 50 shots, including 21 in the second period.

The Golden Eagles were excellent on the man advantage, scoring both of their goals on the power play.
What's Next
The Golden Eagles and Marauders will meet once again tomorrow afternoon before the Super Bowl. Puck drop is set for 1 P.M., from the Crookston Sports Center.
