UMN Crookston Tennis Shows Improvement but Falls 7-0 to Mustangs and Mavericks

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team hosted Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota State University, Mankato Sunday, February 21 at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D. The Golden Eagles showed improvement as they were able to take eight games off the Mustangs in singles and doubles, a marked increase from their previous matches. UMN Crookston took three games from the Mavericks in doubles, and 11 games in singles showing another improvement. Minnesota Crookston fell 7-0 in both matches.

The Golden Eagles fall to 0-5 with the losses. Southwest Minnesota State improves to 4-0, while Minnesota State improves to 1-3 with Sunday's victory.

Against the Mavericks, UMN Crookston was led by Ashley Chomyn (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Gabriela Pinto (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) as they took a game off Courtenay Leonard and Maja Louisa Harck at the No. 2 spot. At No. 1 doubles, Cora Delich and Maegan Flight defeated Tasha Achermann (Fr., Motley, Minn.) and Michelle Swyter (Jr., Perham, Minn.), 6-0. At the No. 3 spot, Karli Renney (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Samantha Hartung (Sr., Albany, Minn.) fell 6-0 to Gwendolen Sior and Silvia Polakidas.

In singles, Achermann took a game in the first set off Delich, but fell 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, Swyter took a game off Leonard in the second set, but fell 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 3 spot, Chomyn picked up a game in the second set, but fell to Harck 6-0, 6-1. At No. 5 singles, Hartung took a game in the first set off Poulakidas, but fell 6-1, 6-0. Pinto put up a great first set against Kennedy Torgerson, as she took three games off the Mustang competitor. Pinto ultimately fell 6-3, 6-0. At the No. 4 slot, Renney fell to Sior, 6-0, 6-0.

In the second match of the day, the Golden Eagles showed improvement led by Chomyn and Pinto at No. 2 doubles. They took two games off Dee Dokken and Kierstin Hall, but fell 6-2. At the No. 1 slot, Swyter and Achermann picked up a game off Tyanna Washa and Lauren Goth, but fell 6-1. At the No. 3 spot, Sarah Johansen and Abbie Clayton defeated Renney and Hartung, 6-0.

In singles, Achermann led the way as she made things difficult for Washa. Achermann won three games in the first set and one in the second. She fell 6-3, 6-1. At the No. 2 spot, Swyter took two games in the second set from Dokken, but fell 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 3 slot, Chomyn competed hard against Hall, picking up two games in the first set and one in the second stanza. She fell 6-2, 6-1. At the No. 4 spot, Renney fell 6-0, 6-0 to Goth. At No. 5 singles, Hartung took a game from Abbe Clayton, but fell 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 6 singles, Pinto picked up a game off Johansen, but fell 6-0, 6-1.

UMN Crookston will return to the court February 27 and 28 against Winona State University and Upper Iowa University in Winona, Minn.
